This Week in Bachelor Nation History: Jillian Harris Dumps Wes, Who Has a Girlfriend
Every Bachelor and Bachelorette has the same fear: that they will fall in love with someone who is there for the wrong reasons. It's even the premise of a famous "Bachelorette" rap, making "here for the right reasons" a repeated testimony over the course of the franchise's 40-plus seasons.
One cast member on Jillian Harris' season of "The Bachelorette" set the stage for what it means to be on the show for exactly the wrong reasons. On Season 5, Wes Hayden had a not-so-secret girlfriend back home, and Jillian finally sent him packing in Spain, which aired July 6, 2009.
Wes impressed Jillian from the get-go, but her female intuition told her there was "something about him that I feel like I need to protect myself." The 32-year-old musician made it clear that he came on the show in order to make a name for himself and advance his career. Despite calls from other men to eliminate him, Jillian kept him around and gave him more chances.
One suitor revealed, "I honestly thing Wes is the guy that she has to worry about. He even told me he had a girlfriend back home."
At another point in the season, future Bachelor Jake Pavelka told Jillian, "Wes has a girlfriend. He’s going to tell you Laura was just a girl from the past that he’s still really good friends with."
Wes essentially told her that verbatim. When she confronted him about his supposed girlfriend, he said, "I had a girlfriend but we were broken up and stayed friends. She’s still one of my best friends."
Jillian sent him packing and handed Ed Swiderski, Kiptyn Locke, and Reid Rosenthal their roses. As Wes rode out of the hotel in his limo, he gave one of the most infamous speeches in Bachelor Nation history.
He said with little remorse and a beer in his hand, "She shot me down. I’m going down in flames. I’m the first guy ever on 'The Bachelorette' to make it to the top four with a girlfriend. I think it’s going to take me a long time to be able to get back on my feet."
Wes joked his "acting days were over," adding, "I’ve definitely gone as far as I can possibly go with Jillian. I’ve already done everything I needed to do, so this is just kind of another bump in the road."
He said he was ready to go home because he had "a new single" ready and "a radio tour that I gotta do ASAP."
Wes concluded, "Tonight, I’m in Spain, and it’s about to go down. I’m going out. I’m cutting off the chains. I’m a free man. I was born at night, but not last night."
