Katie Thurston Reveals She’s Taking a Break from Cancer Treatments & Getting a Double Mastectomy
Opening up.
Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer early last year and has been keeping followers updated with her treatment journey online.
Katie later revealed the news that her breast cancer had spread to her liver and is now at stage 4.
Soon after, she started a new treatment plan that seems to be working, as the tumors in her body have been shrinking.
Now, Katie has revealed in a new update online that she will be pausing her cancer treatments for a short period of time.
In a post on Instagram, she wrote, “Taking a break… My cancer treatment consists of a Lupron injection, daily Letrozole pill, and three weeks on Kisqali, one week off for recovery. I am closely monitored to determine dose reductions or extended breaks. In January, I took a one month mediation break to allow my elevated AST and ALT (liver) to recover. Then went back on, first at 200mg for one cycle, then 400mg for the next.”
Katie shared that it was determined she needs another break for her liver and is now preparing for her upcoming surgery.
“Two weeks into my latest cycle, we retested, and required yet another break for my liver,” she went on. “Unfortunately the recovery is taking longer than hoped. My double mastectomy… I have surgery scheduled April 29th for the removal of both my breasts (DMX). This surgery was already rescheduled once and I won’t delay it again. Because of the timing of my medication break and liver recovery and the date of my surgery which also requires pausing Kisqali, I’ll continue to pause treatment for another two months. My hormone suppression (lupron / letrozole) does a lot of the heavy lifting in my cancer treatment and won’t be paused. Removing the tumor will also be beneficial to my fight against cancer.”
Reassuring her followers, the former Bachelorette also revealed she’s going to be taking a social media break.
She wrote, “I’m going to take a week offline to focus on my health and habits. It’s easy to doom scroll which has an impact on physical health and mental health. Maybe I’ll actually get those 10k steps in. Or those 8 hours of sleep. Maybe I’ll get back to better meal prepping. Or working out. I’m not trying to be dramatic in announcing my time away. I’m ok. I’m going to be ok. Just need a reset…Thank you for your love and support. F**k cancer.”
We’re sending all our love to Katie and we’re continuing to wish her all the best on her treatment journey. You’ve got this, Katie!
