‘The Bachelorette’s’ Trenten Gets Candid About Amputee Representation and His Paralympic Journey
Opening up.
As Bachelor Nation fans know, the most recent “Bachelorette” season is currently on pause. This past week, Bachelor Nation stars Charity Lawson and Kathy Swarts joined together on “Bachelor Happy Hour” to unpack the recent news surrounding the show and introduce a brand-new miniseries on the podcast.
Listeners now have the opportunity to get to know each of the men of “The Bachelorette” Season 22 as they exclusively sit down to discuss how they’re currently feeling and share more of their stories.
This week, three-time Paralympian and professional athlete Trenten joined the podcast to get candid about amputee representation and share more about his Paralympic journey.
While reflecting on what the representation within Bachelor Nation means to him, Trenten shared a story of the person who helped him during his journey.
He said, “You know, I didn’t think about it when my manager had applied for me for the show, and I didn’t think about it when my friends were talking to me about it. But once it became real, then it kind of dawned on me that I have a really cool opportunity to show people that it’s okay to look different and be different. And still have game or just be you! And people are going to be attracted to you. There’ve been a lot of people that have reached out to me, even before the show, they were asking me like, how do they still date now losing their legs? And like, are girls still interested in them? And for me personally, right when I lost my foot, I had a bunch of insecurities.”
He continued, “The doctor came in and he was asking me how I’m doing and I asked him if I can still run, if I can still ride dirt bikes, and if I can still play soccer. And he’s like, ‘I don’t know, Trenten.’ And that hurt because I’m 14 and all I knew was sports. And so a couple weeks went by and this Marine came in and he brought this really good-looking young lady with him too, and he introduced himself. He’s like, ‘Hey, my name is David and I also have a prosthetic leg… How are you doing, Trenten?’”
Trenten shared he asked David a variety of questions, such as if he could still run, ride a motorcycle, and date girls, and the Marine reassured him that he could.
“He’s like, ‘Dude, this is my girlfriend right here,’ and I was like, ‘No way!’ And so I saw at a young age that it only took one man to make a huge difference in my life,” Trenten reflected. “And so for me, I just remember right before the show started and getting out of the limo, like, ‘Man you’ve got a really cool opportunity to indirectly help a lot of people.”
The Paralympian also shared a bit about his story and how he pursued athletics professionally. He revealed that after getting his prosthetic at 14 years old, he rejoined sports in high school and trained to become the best athlete he could.
“I just became a man on a mission to be the best athlete I could be and I didn’t even know about Paralympics in high school,” he stated. “It wasn’t until my second year of community college in Orange County that I was invited to a running clinic with kids with amputees.”
