Katie Thurston Opens Up About ‘Turning Pain Into Purpose’ Amid Cancer Battle
Getting candid.
Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer early last year and has been keeping followers updated throughout her treatment journey online.
Katie later shared that her breast cancer had spread to her liver and progressed to stage 4. Soon after, she began a new treatment plan, and the tumors in her body started shrinking.
Recently, Katie received a double mastectomy and has been keeping followers updated with her health and recovery journey online.
Now, the Bachelor Nation star is opening up in an online interview about how she’s "turning pain into purpose” amid her cancer battle.
While answering a variety of questions about her diagnosis and treatment journey, Katie was asked, “What’s something positive you have gotten to take away from this experience?”
She immediately replied, “Turning pain into purpose. Just knowing like the DMs I get and like I said, if you’re ever ready to share your own story publicly, like the messages you get, you go, ‘This is why I’m doing it. This is why I was — I hate to say — I was picked for breast cancer.’ I wasn’t, maybe, I don’t know.”
Katie continued and shared that she’s received many messages from other women who are also going through their own health journeys online.
“The messages I get from women who are like, ‘Because of you I went and got checked. Because of you, I found my cancer earlier than my doctors, [they] wouldn’t have even looked at me.’ You know, like those stories are like, hell yeah,” she expressed.
Katie then revealed how receiving those messages has made her feel during this time.
“Not to sound dramatic, but I know for certain that I have saved someone’s life,” she reflected. “Maybe even my mom’s. And that is like such a cool feeling of almost like you feel like your life is a little complete. Like you did your part in the world. Not that I want to die tomorrow, but if I did, I know I did good before I left.”
We’re so proud of Katie and all of her advocacy for women’s health online. We’re sending all our love to her and keeping her in our thoughts as she continues her treatment journey. You’ve got this, Katie!
