Joe Amabile Reveals He Could’ve Been Temporarily Paralyzed from His Brain Surgery
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation saw fan-favorite couple Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt fall in love and get engaged on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.” The couple tied the knot in 2023.
Over the summer, Joe shared the news that they discovered an “early stage brain tumor” and he needed brain surgery.
Last month, the Bachelor Nation star revealed the doctors were able to successfully remove the entire tumor during his surgery and he has since been diagnosed with a very low-grade astrocytoma.
Joe stated that he will be on treatment for life and has been keeping followers updated on his recovery journey since.
Both he and Serena co-host a podcast together and recently reflected on their experience from Joe’s surgery in a new episode.
Joe recalled the moments after he woke up, stating, “I remember waking up and being like, ‘Wait, did I go into surgery yet?’ And I felt the top of my head, I was like, ‘Okay, I have something on my head, so it’s done.’ And I remember being really happy that I was awake.”
The Bachelor Nation star went on, revealing that there was a chance he could’ve been temporarily paralyzed from the surgery.
“When they said they got it all, I was like, ‘Okay, at least they got it all.’ Like, step one of what needed to get done had gotten done and it was successful,” he shared.
“I remember moving, because they told me, ‘There is a slight chance that you will wake up and you’ll be paralyzed.’ Because the tumor was on my [front] left side, so it affects my right motor skills. And they said, ‘There [is] a chance that you will be paralyzed when you wake up and it could last. Don’t freak out if it happens, because it will only last two weeks.’”
Serena chimed in, telling Joe, “I was so happy when they said they got it all, but it was really hard for me to feel any sense of relief, excitement, any positive emotions until I could see you. And even then I would say it took a day or two for anything to really sink in.”
“The first thing I did was I felt the top of my head and then I moved my arms and my legs to make sure that I had movement, like, I could move them,” Joe recalled. “It felt good hearing them say that [they] got it all and that I could move and stuff. And then speech I struggled with, but they warned us about that as well.”
We are so glad Joe is okay and that his recovery has been going well. We’re continuing to wish him and Serena all the best and we’re sending our love!
