Jasmine Goode Opens Up About Feeling ‘Censored’ as a Black Woman on Reality TV
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Jasmine Goode on Season 21 of “The Bachelor,” and she later returned to our screens for Season 4 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
Since her time on the shows, Jasmine found love off-screen with her wife Melissa Marie and the two officially tied the knot earlier this year in a romantic ceremony surrounded by friends and family.
The Bachelor Nation star has also been appearing on the reality TV show “The Valley” alongside Melissa and their friends.
Recently, Jasmine vulnerably opened up in a candid interview with Marie Claire magazine about her experience as a Black woman on reality TV and feeling “censored.”
She shared, “The other cast members, they’re allowed to act that way. They can act up, get loud, do this and that — everyone will still listen to them. But the moment I show some emotion, it’s looked at like, ‘Oh, you’re doing too much. You need to calm down.’ That’s frustrating.”
Jasmine was asked if she feels like she’s “censored” herself, to which she replied yes.
“Oh yeah. I’ve always been tiptoeing and being careful with what I say around the group,” she said. “Sometimes I’m worried they’re going to perceive me this way if I say something, so it’s like, ‘Okay, don’t act that way, Jasmine, because the world is going to look at you crazy.’ So it’s been a struggle.”
Jasmine went on, expressing that she’s starting to let people know how she feels, but it was difficult in the beginning.
“Hopefully one day, I’ll get there, where I don’t give a sh*t. I think I’m starting to get there slowly,” she stated. “Like, this season, I’m starting to have those tough conversations and letting people know, ‘Look, this is how I’m feeling.’ But in the beginning, it was really hard to be my true self. I was always nervous that somebody was going to be judging me.”
Jasmine also added that she feels like she can’t do the same things as her cast members.
“And then you see other cast members doing something, and I’m like, I act that way too, right? Because they’re doing it. But I’m like, ‘No, you can’t do it. It’s not the same for you,’” she shared. “Being a Black woman on TV is hard... So I’m just proud of all of us being proud of ourselves.”
We love hearing from Jasmine and we appreciate her vulnerability in sharing her experience. We are so proud of her, and we’re sending our love to her always.
