Colton Underwood Says He Felt 'Crippled With Social Anxiety' After 'The Bachelor'
Colton Underwood is posting about World Mental Health Day one day late, but he’s doing that on purpose.
The Season 23 Bachelor wrote a heartfelt post on Instagram about his own battles with mental health issues, including feeling “crippled by social anxiety.” Colton uploaded a photo of himself grinning, but explained in the caption why he feels like “everyday is mental health day.” The picture is an apt example that someone can be smiling on the outside, but others hardly ever see or know the battles raging inside.
He wrote, “I went to post this yesterday on World Mental Health Day, but I found it more fitting to post it the day after. Mental health is an everyday thing for me.”

Colton didn’t shy away from discussing how being on “The Bachelor” impacted his mental health. He continued, “After my season of the bachelor I was crippled with social anxiety, I lashed out at people I loved and people who loved me because I was frustrated with myself. The simple task of going out for dinner made me anxious.”
The 27-year-old concluded, “Thank God for my friends, family and therapist for being patient with me. I still battle anxiety on a daily basis so I feel like everyday is mental health day. Make sure to check on your strongest friends and family today and everyday. I love y’all.”
Many other Bachelor Nation members wrote about their own mental health struggles and how they cope. Blake Horstmann quoted the beloved “Harry Potter” character Albus Dumbledore in his World Mental Health Day post. His caption read, “‘Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.’ - Albus Dumbledore. Today is World Mental Health Day, this is a reminder to be that light another may need in their time of dark #worldmentalhealthday #beagoodperson #bekind”

Hannah Brown opened up about depression and anxiety in her weekly “Bustle” diary, and discussed how that’s playing a role in her “Dancing with the Stars” practice. She wrote on October 2, “I've been very open about my mental health — honestly, it's a taboo thing that nobody talks about. I have to think that even though I sometimes get pissed off and mad, there has to be a reason why I've been put in this spotlight right now. My gift, and sometimes curse, is that I'm so open about my life.”
Additionally, Jason Tartick let his guard down in his very personal and introspective post about his “laundry list of life stages.” He shared, “At different times within those stages, all on a prescription basis, I have at some point taken SSRI’s, Propranolol, and/or Xanax. In addition, I have leveraged the professional help of therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists.”
Jason said he still struggles with “situational anxiety” and is working on it. He concluded, “mental illness is an invisible disability that needs to be brought to the forefront of our attention. No one under any circumstance should be ashamed or embarrassed if they are experiencing or have experienced mental illness.”
