The Advice Kaitlyn Bristowe Would Give to Her 27-Year-Old Self
Kaitlyn Bristowe did not hold back when opening up about her late teens and early 20s in her new YouTube series "9 to Wine."
The Season 11 Bachelorette spoke about growing up Alberta, Canada, how she became a cheerleader in Vancouver then moved to Germany for her hockey player boyfriend, auditioning for "The Bachelor," and all the ups and downs in between. At one point in the video, Kaitlyn discussed her difficulties living in Germany and "emotionally relying" on her boyfriend, and the effects it had later on.
She shared, "When I say I lost myself, that is an understatement. I think I had out-of-body experiences in Germany where I was a child kicking and screaming on the floor bawling my eyes out. It’s like I was looking down at myself saying, 'What are you doing? Get off the floor,' and I couldn’t. I was just a shell of myself."
Kaitlyn and her beau ended their relationship, which she described as "very abrupt." She said, "I always thought he would fight for me and we would figure it out, but he was like, 'You are not OK. We can’t keep doing this.' Deep down in my soul I knew that."

After ending their relationship, Kaitlyn moved back home to Alberta with her mom and stepdad when she was 27. She described the experience: "Now I’m like, '27 is so young, you have your whole life ahead of you.' But when you’re 27, you’re like, 'I'm really moving back in with my family. The love of my life just ended things. I have zero job, zero momentum, zero motivation. I am in a really rough place.'"
Kaitlyn continued, "Anyone who knows severe heartbreak knows that you’re also going through a grieving process of losing somebody. It is heavy, dark times."
She discussed her depression, and how she was ultimately prescribed an antidepressant and Valium. Kaitlyn described feeling "numb" on Valium, until one day "someone shook me and said, 'You can’t live like this. This is not you.'"
In hindsight, Kaitlyn has some words of wisdom for her younger self.
"I always think if I could go back to my 27-year-old self and talk to her, I would say, 'You can’t let anyone be responsible for your own happiness. That is up to you,'" she shared. "Now I can say that because I am in a fulfilling, loving, happy relationship. But 27-year-old Kaitlyn was just starting to learn that and figure it out. You cannot make someone else responsible for your own happiness."

Kaitlyn continues to be open and share her high and low points in her personal life with her millions of fans. On May 1, she penned an especially heartfelt tribute to her boyfriend Jason Tartick about how "grateful" she feels for him. She commended his work ethic, his personality, and his love for her.
She wrote on Instagram, "We have helped each other grow in so many ways. Through this weird time yes, of course I have wanted to throat chop him, and I’m sure there have been plenty of times where he’s wanted to run. But I know we both don’t know what we would do without one another."
