'Listen to Your Heart's' Trevor Holmes Says Surfing Helps His Anxiety and Depression
Each person has their own coping mechanisms and means of escape, and for Trevor Holmes, it exists in the form of surfing.
The "Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart" veteran opened up on Instagram Monday about the power surfing has on easing his harder mental health days. He uploaded a selfie in front of his surfboard with the shaka hang sign, or more commonly known as the "hang loose" sign.
Trevor began, "I can’t even begin to describe how much surfing has impacted my life. Like any other human, somedays I struggle with anxiety and depression. Some days I get to such a dark place mentally. When it gets really bad I just want to go out and party and drink my problems away, but that never erases the problems, just masks it."

The artist explained that he’s taken a healthier approach to grappling with these "dark" times.
"Now, when I feel overwhelmed, I throw my board in the car and head down to the ocean," he shared. "By the time I get out of the water, whether I’ve caught any good waves or not, I feel like a new person. All that being said, find something you love to do for yourself and don’t ever stop doing it."

Trevor regularly posts photos on social media from the beach or videos of him surfing. On May 15, for instance, he wrote, "Daydreaming about post quarantine beach days. My home surf break is county line in Malibu, CA. One of my favorite things in life is surfing there with friends. We have a surf gang there called Count Line Kooks (CLK). Shoutout to the boys."

He also celebrated Earth Day by sharing a snapshot from a day on the beach, writing, "Happy Earth Day!! So grateful for this floating rock we live on called earth. If you really take a second to appreciate all it’s beauty, it’s pretty surreal. Dreaming of the day we’re all healthy again and I can go for a surf."
