Zac Clark Discusses His Sobriety and Clears Up His 'Champagne' Toasts on 'The Bachelorette'
Following his engagement to Tayshia Adams on the Season 16 finale of “The Bachelorette,” Zac Clark joined his fiancée and her “Click Bait with Bachelor Nation” co-hosts, Joe Amabile and Natasha Parker, to discuss how his commitment to sobriety impacted his time on the show.
During their chat, the handsome addiction specialist cleared up any confusion over his “champagne” toasts.
“Apple cider for the win. I mean, it’s like, come on people, let’s use our imagination here,” Zac said. “No, there was no drinking [for me] on the show. Sober to me means no drugs, no alcohol, no nothing since August of 2011. I got to say, everyone who worked on the show, every time there was a toast, there was someone with an apple cider [or] sparkling something for me.”
Tayshia — who recorded the podcast with Zac from his place in New York City, where she recently moved — said she was “so happy” to discuss the topic “because it is wild how much attention this gets.” She added that Zac would also drink ginger ale at times, before pondering, “Who’s going to claim that they’re sober but when it comes to a toast go like, ‘Oh, just one glass of champagne?’ You know what I mean?”
Later, Zac told a sweet story about how he knew Tayshia was The One when she decided to skip the champagne and also go for a glass of cider during one memorable Rose Ceremony.
“We’ve been asked a lot [about] the moment I knew that Tayshia liked me. There was a night after the Rose Ceremony. There’s always this round of toasts. So we were down to maybe, like, five guys. And a guy came out with a tray of champagne and there were four champagnes and one apple cider and [Tayshia] looked at him and she goes, ‘No, I’m drinking apple cider with him tonight,’” Zac recalled. “I go, ‘What?’ So she made the guy go back and get an apple cider. She was on Team Clarky that day. That’s when I knew. She was flirting with me, for sure.”
As Bachelor Nation will recall, Tayshia and Zac’s bond grew deeper after the Release Recovery founder bravely shared with her how he overcame a years-long battle with substance abuse and the pain his family suffered during his path to recovery. Zac has been sober for nearly a decade.
“For me, I do want to say it’s a personal choice. If someone’s like in this dark deep hole and they’re hammering drugs and they come out of that and they’re able to drink here and there, props to them,” he said on “Click Bait.” “But for me, my choice, my best life is no nothing. And that’s something I’ve committed to.”
