Ivan Hall Opens Up About His Biracial Background and Support of BLM and Stop Asian Hate Movements
Ivan Hall stopped by “Talking It Out” to chat with co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo about his biracial background and voicing his support for the Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate movements on social media.
“Before the show, social media for me was nothingness. I probably had, like, nine or 10 Instagram posts, posted once a year, wasn’t that active,” said the “Bachelorette” Season 16 star, who earned a spot among Tayshia Adams’ final four. (Tayshia ultimately sent Ivan home before handing her final rose to now-fiancé Zac Clark.)
Ivan — whose father is Black and mother is Filipina — went on to say that he felt compelled to post more on his Instagram page in the wake of the racial reckoning that has occurred within the U.S. over the last year, which partly converged with his time filming “The Bachelorette” in 2020.
As Bachelor Nation will recall, Ivan and Tayshia — whose father is Black and mother is Mexican — spoke candidly about their shared biracial experiences amid last summer’s reignited Black Lives Matter movement, a direct response to the murder of George Floyd and unceasing police brutality against people of color.
Later, in 2021, the Stop Asian Hate movement launched in the face of growing attacks against Asian Americans following hateful rhetoric incited by former President Donald Trump. (Trump and senior members of his administration were often criticized during his presidency for calling the novel coronavirus the “Chinese virus.”)
“Everybody’s like, ‘Do I need to post something here? This thing’s happening.’ Everybody’s like, ‘This is performative,’ or, ‘You just need to do it anyways.’ So it’s a very complicated thing,” explained Ivan, who has personally felt the impact of both racial justice movements. “People should just do what they feel most comfortable with. I do think speaking out on things is a good thing.”
The handsome aeronautical engineer added, “Within your circles, you should always promote good positive change and talk about issues, especially with all the things going on in the past couple years.”
