Clare Crawley Opens Up About Surviving Sexual Abuse by Catholic Priest and Reveals Her Mother Is in Hospice Care
Former Bachelorette Clare Crawley just opened up about surviving childhood sexual abuse in an emotional new episode of “Red Table Talk: The Estefans.”
In July, Clare took to Instagram to share a vulnerable post about how being a victim of sexual abuse as a child has impacted her relationships as an adult.
In her interview on "Red Table Talk: The Estefans,” Clare revealed for the first time publicly that she was sexually abused by a Catholic priest when she was around 5 or 6 years old.

The former Bachelorette said, “I grew up going to a Catholic school when I was a victim of a predator. My parents looked at Catholic priests — they held them on a pedestal. And the Catholic school treated him as a counselor. My parents did the best they could and reached out for the resources they could at the time and sent me to this priest, and I don’t think there was any counseling that was done — it was one-on-one time to be a predator.”
Clare also shared that while she didn’t discuss what happened “for years and years and years,” eventually she told one of her sisters, who went to their parents. After Clare’s parents learned about the abuse, she explained that they sued the church.
Unfortunately, Clare revealed, the priest was just moved to a different parish and “he did it to more children, and the church allowed him, knowing that he was a predator, to perpetuate what he was doing.”
During the honest conversation, Clare also discussed how her experience as a survivor of sexual abuse affected her relationship with her mother, Lilia.
Clare said that as soon as her mom found out, “My siblings and my sisters noticed that she did treat me differently, maybe intentional, unintentional, I don’t know. There was just always something in between our relationship. She was a good mother to me. But there was always just something in between.”
She explained that she confronted her mom a few years ago about their relationship and learned that her mother had been abused as well.
“She had never shared that. And I didn’t ask the details, but she just started crying and apologizing and said, ‘I didn’t know how to handle it.’ And I think how she handled me was a reflection of how she was taught, mentally, to handle it,” Clare explained.

Their relationship is very different now, since Clare has been a caretaker for her mom as she has struggled with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
On Thursday, Clare took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news that her mom was just placed on hospice care.

She wrote, “My energy is focused on grieving, healing, and being present at home here in Sacramento while trying to share and help others going through similar life experiences as I’m sharing today.”
We’re thinking of Clare and sending her and her family love during this difficult time.
