This Week in Bachelor Nation History: Clare Crawley’s Journey as the Bachelorette Kicks Off in Bachelor Nation’s First COVID Bubble
While many seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” have been dubbed “the most dramatic of all time” and “unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” Clare Crawley’s season of “The Bachelorette” really was unlike anything Bachelor Nation (and the world) had seen before.
Season 16 was set to begin filming in early April 2020, which as we all know was when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns hit the United States. The show faced major delays, something the franchise had never had experienced in the course of nearly 20 years of filming.
At the time, Clare posted on Instagram, “In all seriousness, everyone’s health is the most important priority at this time, and as I’m sure you’ve heard, we are pressing pause for now on filming ‘The Bachelorette.’ ... I’ve waited 38 years for these moments, what’s a little bit longer, right!”
The show was finally able to begin filming in the summer, and “The Bachelorette” was one of the first Hollywood productions to find a way to move forward safely during the ongoing pandemic.
Unlike past seasons, where cast members and the Bachelorette would jet around the world, Clare and her men were to remain at the La Quinta Resort and Club near Palm Springs, California, for the duration of the season.
Self-quarantine periods, COVID-19 testing, temperature checks, and more health and safety protocols were put in place to ensure a safe season for everyone involved in the production.
And now, exactly one year ago this week, Clare’s journey as the Bachelorette began, making history as the first “Bachelor” franchise show to be filmed in a bubble.
In the very first episode, Clare discusses how grateful she is for the opportunity to date during such an unusual time. While she was excited to start her journey, fans got a tease of what was to come during her season.
We saw Clare crying out at one of her men that she is the oldest Bachelorette because “I didn’t settle for men like that.” We also saw Chris Harrison tell Clare that she has officially “blown up ‘The Bachelorette’” by deciding to leave the show early.
Pandemic aside, Clare’s season really was unlike anything we’d ever seen before!
