Bachelor Nation fans met Rodney when he was dressed as an apple to meet Michelle Young on night one of “The Bachelorette.”

And while he hilariously called himself a Granny Smith apple, despite being in a red apple costume, he and Michelle have found ways to joke about it since the mishap.

Now, Rodney stopped by the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast to discuss his time on the show, including his famous night one costume.

When co-hosts Bryan Abasolo and Mike Johnson asked Rodney how he came up with the idea to dress as an apple, Rodney revealed that he wanted to catch Michelle’s eye and show her that he was different from the other guys.

He also said it showed a bit of his goofy side, but when he saw how the rest of the guys looked, Rodney instantly regretted his apple costume.

The Bachelor Nation star said, “Walking down those stairs, seeing all the guys, I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ Everyone was 6-foot-4 or taller and had perfect skin. Then there’s me. I’m walking in as the third-shortest guy in the room, plus, I’m dressed as an apple! So I knew it was gonna be a rough night. But it was just funny. Looking back at it now and seeing how it all played out, I just laugh.”

Aside from meeting the guys dressed as an apple, Rodney also was nervous to meet Michelle, regardless of his outfit.

He said, “Getting out of the limo, I was just trying to get my mind right, thinking everything’s gonna be cool. It’s game day. As a former athlete, that’s how I think about it. But as soon as I got out of the limo, instantly, everything went out the window. I started shaking. I’m nervous. I’m sweating. Having all the lights and cameras on us was something I’m not used to at all. Plus, Michelle was just looking so beautiful and so stunning that I was just instantly nervous.”

Thankfully, Rodney said that Michelle’s quick wit and sense of humor instantly calmed him down.

Rodney noted that, “She’s just so attractive to me in every way. Especially in that moment, I was like, ‘That’s exactly what I’m looking for.’ She was so quick and witty and funny. Michelle makes it known that you can open up and be vulnerable with her, but she still has a funny, goofy side too. A lot of people don’t get to see that, so I’m glad that I was able to see that from night one.”

And that instant comfort continued for Michelle and Rodney during one of their playful one-on-one conversations where Michelle decided to put Rodney up to an apple taste test after not knowing what a Granny Smith looked like.

As fans saw, Rodney failed the apple taste test and Bryan and Mike poked fun at him for the hilarious moment.

Rodney said, “I have no excuse. Like, I’m not even gonna blame it on nerves or whatever. Growing up, when my mom bought apples, it was just red or green. We didn’t get too crazy. And once I got to the show, all my knowledge of apples went out the window, as you saw. So yeah, now the world knows I know nothing about apples and I’m almost 30. Very embarrassing!”

Rodney also joked that Michelle knows a surprising amount about apples in comparison to his lack of apple knowledge.
