‘The Bachelorette’s’ Martin Explains His Controversial Remarks on the Show and Opens Up About His Dramatic Exit
Fans saw Martin vie for Michelle Young’s heart on Season 18 of “The Bachelorette,” and while they made an initial connection, by the time Martin left, he and Michelle weren’t on the best of terms.
Martin made a few comments that upset Michelle and rubbed Bachelor Nation fans the wrong way.
From calling women high maintenance to saying Michelle didn’t deserve a man like him in his dramatic exit, Martin felt he had some explaining to do, as things were taken out of context and he wishes he had taken a beat to think about what he was saying before he said it.
Martin stopped by the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast after this week’s “Men Tell All” episode to discuss the comments he made throughout the season.
Co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo started off by asking Martin about the high maintenance comment, and Martin says Michelle didn’t take it the way he intended.
He explained, “In the conversation where I talked about the high maintenance thing, I was trying to give her a compliment by explaining to her that that’s the reason I was there. She is the opposite of high maintenance. I feel like that word triggered her and she tried to stand up for women in general, and I commend her for that, but at the same time I was trying to say that relationships should be 50/50 in every aspect. If not, it takes away from the power of women.”

Martin also revealed that he felt misunderstood and called it a “cultural difference” because other people from Miami knew what he meant by the comment.
The Bachelor Nation star said, “It’s also a cultural difference. Most of the viewers are not in Miami or haven’t lived in Miami. Most of the women who messaged me from Miami were either joking around, saying things like, ‘Hey, I’m not high maintenance, how’s it going?’ or ‘Hey, I understand exactly what you’re trying to say because I live here.’ Amidst all the hate and thousands of messages of people calling me an a**hole, some people understood what I was trying to say.”
But despite saying he didn’t mean any harm with his comment, Martin says he does wish he had stepped back to take a deep breath and think about his words. He said the cameras were around and it was “hard to respond rather than digging myself into a hole.”
“In the moment, I should’ve taken a step back and tried to read the situation a bit better and tried to understand, okay, why was she upset?” Martin explained.
And it wasn’t just the high maintenance comment that Mike and Bryan asked Martin about. They also discussed his dramatic exit, where he said some hurtful things about his Bachelorette, Michelle.

Looking back on it now, Martin said, “I understand that what I said wasn’t the right thing to say. It was out of character, and it was in the heat of the moment. All I can do right now is apologize for my actions and for acting like a child in the moment. I just threw a fit and it was caught on camera.”
He added, “I know that I’m not perfect and I don’t express myself to the best of my abilities at all times. When you have control of the narrative in your normal life because no one is filming you, you have the time and ability to explain yourself if in the moment you said something that didn’t sound right.”
And while Mike appreciated Martin taking accountability for his actions, he did say that while things can be taken out of context, “the words that come out of our mouth are the words that come out of our mouth.”
