Nayte Addresses Concerns About His Readiness for Engagement, Plus: How He Stays Focused on His Relationship with Michelle
Fans are watching Nayte and Michelle’s love story continue to unfold on “The Bachelorette.” It’s clear these two are head over heels for each other and Nayte is one of Michelle’s final two men.
But during his Hometown date, his family raised some concerns about Nayte’s readiness for an engagement at the end of their “Bachelorette” journey.
Nayte stopped by the “Click Bait with Bachelor Nation” podcast to address this conversation.
He said that people have to realize that the show is only an hour and a half, and the conversations he and Michelle had with his stepdad were much longer than what made it to air.
Nayte explained, “There were some key parts of those conversations that you didn’t see. Long story short, he said he should’ve taken a couple steps back in that moment realizing that he and I never had that conversation before. So he was like, ‘Who am I to say whether you’re ready for an engagement or not?’ I think his gut feeling was that maybe I wasn’t ready or that I should take things slow. But ultimately, after talking with my stepdad and mom after that episode aired, their biggest takeaway was that they just didn’t want me to get hurt. That’s where most of their concern was really coming from.”

The Bachelor Nation star continued, sharing, “Their concern wasn’t as much about if I was ready or not. It was more so that they could see how I was feeling about Michelle and there was a chance I could be absolutely heartbroken in the most public way possible. My mom said it best: She was being a big mama bear and wanted to protect her son from possibly being heartbroken.”
“Click Bait” co-host Joe Amabile chimed in, saying that he agrees with Nayte and shared, “It’s not like you’re not ready for love or you’re always prepared for love. It just happens when it happens.”
Nayte agreed, saying that is what he was trying to say to Michelle during the dinner portion of their Fantasy Suite date.
He explained, “I probably didn’t say it as well as I wanted to, but what I was trying to say is that life is all about the unknown. When Michelle was asking about the difference between being in love and an engagement, what I was trying to say was I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know what life would look like outside of this bubble. All I knew was that I was falling in love with her and I trust that I seriously wanted to be with her.”
And when it came to how Nayte stayed so focused on his relationship while Michelle was developing feelings for other men, he said he only focused on what he could control.
Nayte said, “You can only control what you can control. No matter what I do, I will never know what’s going on between Michelle and Brandon or Michelle and Rodney, or Leroy, or Joe. I will never know what they’re talking about, doing, or what their vibe is, so why think about it? All I could do was control my moments with Michelle.”

Nayte shared the analogy he uses when explaining the situation to family and friends, saying, “Who would win in one-on-one basketball, you versus Tiger Woods? Do you even know how you could compare yourself to Tiger Woods in that situation? You have no idea how he plays basketball. If you asked me about golf, obviously I’m getting my ass kicked, it’s Tiger Woods. But what about basketball?”
The Bachelor Nation star continued, “That’s why when I would get questions like ‘What do you think is going on between Brandon and Michelle?’ or ‘Who do you think has a strong connection with her?’ I would say I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on between them, so how could I even start to compare myself to the other guys? I had no idea what was going on, so all I could do was compare myself to myself and what I’m looking forward next.”
Make sure to tune in to “The Bachelorette” finale next Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC to see how Nayte and Michelle’s journey ends.
