Becca & Thomas Discuss Their ‘Untraditional Engagement,’ Plus: Their Future Plans for Their Last Names
Becca Kufrin and Thomas Jacobs are engaged!
Becca popped the question to Thomas last month, and they shared the news with Bachelor Nation fans on social media on May 29.
Now, the couple is sitting down on the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast for a conversation about their untraditional engagement and their response to the haters.
Thomas started off sharing how their family and friends responded to their engagement news, saying, “There were two common phrases that people responded with when we told our family and friends. They said, ‘No way’ and ‘That’s awesome.’ If you think about it, the sentiment of it is so incredible. I have someone who cares about me so much, she wanted to do that for me.”
Thomas went on and shared why Becca proposing meant so much to him, saying, “Doing something that’s not done — talk about an uncommon gesture of love — it’s so outside the ordinary and so much thought has to go into it. It’s not just about the idea, but to have the courage for that to be an idea you want to act on, it’s amazing. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience that and even more fortunate that it’s with you, Becca. I’m just excited for this life.”

Becca’s co-host Michelle Young agreed that the proposal was incredible, chiming in with, “Good luck to whoever proposes in ‘Paradise.’ No one is topping this one! Thank goodness Nayte and I are already engaged because that just beats everything. It’s so amazing.”
We couldn’t agree more!
And later in their conversation, Becca shared where she originally got the inspiration to propose to Thomas.
The former Bachelorette said, “It’s ‘traditional’ for a man to propose to a woman, but I remember being in eighth grade in dance and at the recital, my ballet teacher proposed to her husband. I remember as an eighth grader, my first thoughts were ‘That’s weird,’ but then right away I was like, ‘Actually, that’s kind of cool.’ I still remember that moment from decades ago that it was rad to be switching the norm.”
Becca went on and discussed the negative feedback they’ve received about her proposal in addition to the love.

She said, “We have received so much love from people, but I’ve also seen comments where people were calling me desperate and that they would never allow a woman to propose to a man, but cool, that’s you. Why does it make me desperate as a woman to want to marry somebody, but if Thomas were to do the exact same thing, no one would call him desperate?”
She went on, “It doesn’t make sense to me. Love is love and every relationship is vastly different, so why not let us do what works for us? I knew he would be so appreciative and supportive of it and never offended by me proposing. Why should it matter who does it?”
Say it louder for the people in the back, Becca!

And they are going to continue to switch up standard traditions going forward in their relationship.
When it comes to their last names once they’re married, Becca said, “We’re going to hyphenate. I don’t know if it matters which comes first, like Kufrin-Jacobs or Jacobs-Kufrin, but we’ll for sure hyphenate and we’ll have our kids hyphenate too. They are both of us.”
Thomas shared why it’s so important for them to keep both of their last names, saying, “One of the reasons it’s so special to hyphenate names is because Becca lost her father and it’s her and her sister, so I don’t want to see any scenario where there isn’t a Kufrin around in the world. I think that is a special thing to have.”
We love that, and we love their love! To hear more about Becca and Thomas’ engagement, check out the full episode of “Bachelor Happy Hour” below.
