Spencer Opens Up About His Military Background, Plus: What His Family Thought About Him Going on ‘The Bachelorette’
Learning more about Spencer.
This week, Spencer received Gabby’s group date rose on “The Bachelorette,” and now he’s stopping by the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast to discuss his time on the show so far.
Spencer opened up to co-hosts Bryan Abasolo and Mike Johnson about how his family felt about him going on “The Bachelorette” to look for love.
He said, “At first, my mom was nervous about her boy going on the show. She wanted everyone to like me, her son. My dad was the one saying we needed to talk about fashion and shoes and things like that. He was like, ‘If you’re my son, you are going to be looking good.’”

Spencer went on, adding, “But with my mom, once I talked to her about the reasons why I wanted to go on, she was 100% supportive. My sister too. They’ve all been great.”
And he also shared some advice that his mom gave him going into the show.
Spencer said, “The best advice I got was to be open and be vulnerable, and that was tough at first. That was very hard for me. Not saying it wasn’t also hard for other people; everyone has their own struggle. For me, being so serious and having my military past, it was hard for me to open up.”
So he shared how grateful he was for this tip, saying, “I am really happy I had the advice beforehand to be open and honest, though. My mom told me that. She was like, ‘If you’re going to do this you, can’t go 90%. You have to go 100%.”
That’s some great advice!

And it paid off. On this week’s group date, Spencer got to be vulnerable with Gabby during his speech.
He said, “Beforehand, giving the speech to Gabby sounded more intimidating, but in the moment, it was actually really easy. The longer I was getting to know the girls throughout this process, the easier it became to open up. If you asked me on day one, giving a speech would’ve made me very nervous. But in the last episode, it was easy.”
Spencer went on, adding, “Getting to look at her and just tell her what I see in her and what I love about her was easier than I thought it would’ve been. She is amazing in a million different ways.”
