Bryan Abasolo & Mike Johnson Debate Getting Engaged at the End of ‘The Bachelorette’
Breaking down the drama.
On this week’s episode of “The Bachelorette,” fans saw both Gabby and Rachel’s suitors questioning whether they were ready for an engagement at the end of the season.
Over the years, we’ve seen successful couples like JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers get engaged at the end of their season, but we’ve also seen couples like Clayton Echard and Susie Evans who didn’t get engaged but are still going strong.
So now, Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo are discussing the pros and cons of getting engaged at the end of a Bachelor franchise show on “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation.”
Bryan, who famously got engaged to Rachel Lindsay at the end of Season 13 of “The Bachelorette,” thinks an engagement at the end of the show makes sense.
He said, “When it was my season, I didn’t know I was the only one. I thought someone else was still around. I had no doubt in my mind, I was ready. Hearing Erich’s words, I wonder what’s holding him back. You say you’re in love with her, you say you want to spend the rest of your life with her, so put a ring on it.”

But Mike played devil’s advocate, saying, “I can see what he would say. He would say, ‘Can I at least see you outside this bubble? Is that too big of a request?’”
Bryan said that getting engaged doesn’t mean you still can’t date each other after the show.
“Technically you could see each other outside of this while being engaged as well. Rachel and I dated after the show, obviously. That was our main goal. We wanted to move to the same city,” Bryan explained.
And Mike responded, saying, “Basically, what you’re trying to say is, ‘Look, bro, just get engaged for the show. You’re still going to date the girl afterwards.’”
So Bryan shared why getting engaged worked for him and Rachel and why he was so confident in his decision to propose on “The Bachelorette.”

Bryan said, “You end up dating the person afterwards anyway. Here’s the thing: It’s obvious that not everyone can know 100% about the other person. Rachel’s family even asked me how I could be so sure and what it is about her, and you only know so much about that person in that short amount of time.”
He went on, saying, “The way I expressed it was that we didn’t know everything there is to know about one another, but what I did know is that I loved and was in love with the foundation. That’s how I truly felt. I knew that I would get to know all the little details, I just loved the foundation we had built. She checked all the boxes for me, so I was willing and wanted to take that next step to get engaged. Look, if things ended up not working out later on, I wasn’t even thinking like that.”
The two are still married and more in love than ever, so the process clearly worked for them!
