Abigail Heringer Discusses Her ‘Deaf Accent’ and How Her Voice Changes When Her Processor Is Off
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Abigail Heringer on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to find love with Noah Erb on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
During her time on “The Bachelor,” Abigail opened up to Matt James about her hearing loss and how she wears a cochlear implant.
Since her time on the shows, Abigail has been sharing her life with Bachelor Nation on social media, including many posts about being deaf, where she educates her hundreds of thousands of followers.
This week as a part of her “Hear Me Out” series, Abi opened up about her “deaf accent.”
In a video posted to Instagram, she said, “A lot of deaf people have what’s called a deaf accent. Some people notice it when I have my processor on, but it’s definitely more noticeable when my processor is off. I actually have to take my processor off to curl this side of my hair, so I’ll show you guys what I mean.”
Abigail took off her processor and explained why her voice might sound a little different without it on.
She said, “The reason that my voice sounds different or my deaf accent comes out more when my processor is off is due to something called the auditory feedback loop. It happens when you speak and you’re able to listen to yourself and then make any corrections if something sounds wrong. When I don’t have my processor on, like right now, I’m not able to listen and make those corrections. I feel like my deaf accent sounds like words being slurred at the end and my voice gets a little bit deeper and I talk a little bit louder than I normally do.”
Abigail asked her boyfriend Noah if he can tell when she’s not wearing it and he said, “Sometimes yeah, but both are hot!”
So sweet! We love a supportive partner.
The Bachelor Nation star continued her explanation, saying, “When I have my processor on, I’m able to use the auditory feedback loop and I feel like my deaf accent just becomes a little bit less noticeable. My family and friends that know me really well can tell pretty much right away when I’m not wearing it, but some people don’t even notice at all. So that’s what’s happening when I talk about my deaf accent.”
Many of Abigail’s fellow Bachelor Nation stars showed her love in the comments of her post.
Chelsea Vaughn said, “Think about your younger self that was afraid to let other people hear you speak without it or even to wear your hair up. Now you’re posting confidently for hundreds of thousands. I’m so proud of you and so is she ILY.”
Sarah Trott chimed in, adding, “This is so sweet. Thank you for sharing and educating us!”
And Marylynn Sienna wrote, “So cool babe! Thank you for sharing. You’re amazing.”
We couldn’t agree more, and we love how Abigail continues to use her platform to educate her followers. Check out her full video here.
