Joey Opens Up About Sharing His Dad’s Coming Out Story with Charity
Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation fans are getting to know Joey on Season 20 of “The Bachelorette” and on this week’s episode, he got to spend some one-on-one time with Charity.
After the two broke the record of Bachelor Nation’s longest kiss ever, they had a one-on-one date night where Joey opened up to the Bachelorette about his family.
Joey shared that his parents got divorced when he was younger after his dad came out as gay.
Now, Joey is stopping by the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast, where he opened up to co-hosts Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt about his family’s story.
Joey told the co-hosts, “I had to think through when I wanted to bring up my parents’ divorce and my dad coming out. It’s serious and it’s important. I had a conversation with my dad before going on the show and I wanted to make sure he was okay with me sharing his story. It’s something that’s affected me, but it’s really his life. I had that conversation with him, and he was comfortable and trusted me on how I would talk about it and it would be shared in the right light.”
The Bachelor Nation star continued on, saying, “You never know on this show if you get your moment to share something personal. It was a mix of feeling so comfortable with Charity to talk to her about it and also not knowing when I would get another time like that to have the uninterrupted moment to share it correctly. It was something that is really important to me, and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t the kind of thing I’d be talking about and then a guy would come interrupt after not getting a chance to share too much.”
Both Serena and Joe said they thought it was a beautiful moment and they know how many people appreciated him sharing.
Joey opened up more about his relationship with his dad and said why he felt so comfortable sharing with Charity.
The Bachelor Nation star explained, “You have to connect on something, and family is something that’s so big for Charity. I could also talk about my family for hours. To explain my family’s dynamic was something that was super important.”
Joey added, “My dad is one of my favorite people in this world and I talk to him about everything. So when explaining who he is as a person, it’s part of him and it’s something that needs to be talked about more and not so refrained from or worried to talk about. It just felt like the right moment at that time.”
