Demi Burnett Celebrates Being 2 Years Alcohol-Free and Reveals How Natasha Parker Helped Her
Major milestone.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Demi Burnett on Season 23 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to appear on Seasons 6 and 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
Now, Demi is taking to Instagram to celebrate a major milestone in her sobriety journey.
Demi wrote, “TWO YEARS ALCOHOL FREE!!!!! Swipe to see what I do instead of drink,” and she included photos of her knitting, baking, painting, playing video games, and hanging with her pets.
In her post, Demi also got candid about her journey to becoming alcohol-free and how she got to where she is today.
The Bachelor Nation star wrote, “On July 24, 2021, I made a decision. I decided to stop drinking alcohol cold turkey. This is a very dangerous thing to do and I do not recommend anyone EVER quitting alcohol without medical assistance. If you quit on your own, you put your life at risk. My withdrawals were so bad that I had seizures and was hospitalized for three days.”
Demi shared that fellow Bachelor Nation alumni Natasha Parker was there for her during this very difficult time.
Demi wrote, “The only reason I made it to the hospital is because I had my wonderful, angel of a friend Natasha Parker with me. She called the ambulance and stayed at the hospital with me until other friends could be there. She called my friends and family and let them know what happened. I am forever grateful for and in awe of Natasha Parker.”
Natasha commented on Demi's post writing, "Your strength is so inspiring, I love you so much."
Demi shared what led to her drinking the amount that she was and got vulnerable about her experience.
Demi said, “When it comes to WHY I was drinking so much, the answer surprised me. I had been drinking to self-medicate my anxiety and nervous system activations. I was drinking to ‘tone down’ the intense way the world feels to me. I was drinking to get rid of the fear that people will tell me how to exist. I could be parts of my real self drinking, because the alcohol took away the fear of people rejecting me for it. But it also made me able to ignore my feelings on things, making me less myself.”
Demi shared that her undiagnosed autism at the time didn’t help when it came to self-medicating with alcohol.
She wrote, “I believe there are a lot of diagnosed or undiagnosed neurodivergent people suffering from this same problem. Understanding how my brain works and knowing why I needed to numb it, helps me find other ways to regulate myself in a healthy way.”
Demi shared some of the healthier tools like earbuds and dark sunglasses that have helped her feel less overstimulated without reaching for a drink.
She concluded her post by writing, “These tools make it easier for me to process the world around me. Alcohol was a tool for me. It was a tool that helped me get through the world comfortably. Learning I am neurodivergent and understanding more about my brain makes it possible for me to find new, healthy tools to accommodate for myself.”
We are so proud of Demi and we’re continuing to support her on her journey.
