Zac Clark Shares How Having a Brain Tumor Led to Him Becoming a Heroin Addict
Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation met Zac Clark on Season 16 of “The Bachelorette” and as fans remember, Zac shared his struggle with addiction and journey to sobriety with Tayshia on-screen.
Since his time on the show, Zac has continued to share resources for addiction, mental health, and more through his company Release Recovery Addiction Treatment Center.
Now, he’s opening up about how he became a heroin addict in a viral TikTok video.
Alongside the video, Zac wrote, “Let’s talk about heroin. How I became a heroin addict…”
Zac kicks off the video by saying, “I was out to dinner with a friend this week and they asked me an amazing question. They said, ‘How does someone become a heroin addict?’ I appreciated their curiosity and I quickly jumped into my story because I know how I became a heroin addict and I started this video by showing you a scar. That is from a brain tumor I had at 24 years old. What happened after that brain tumor is that I was introduced to opiates, really strong opiates. It was a high that I had never felt before.”
The Bachelor Nation star continued on, sharing, “Despite the fact that I loved to party in college and after college, this was new and it was exciting and I felt great despite the fact that I just had something chopped out of my dome. So what happened from there, is I got out of the hospital, I started to recover and the doctors stopped prescribing me the opiates. I quickly started to feel like shit, I went into withdrawals, and no medical professional sat down with me to explain that I was probably going to be addicted to opiates.”
That’s when Zac shares that he sought out the drugs on his own after they were no longer being prescribed to him.
He said, “I took matters into my own hands and I went out to the streets and started buying Oxycontin for $60, $70, or $80 per pill. I continued that habit for about a year or two years. It got really expensive. What I learned eventually is that I could reset my tolerance and the way I was going to do that was by going to the street again, but this time buying heroin. I learned that a $10 bag of heroin gave me the same effect that a $60 pill of Oxycontin gave me. Naturally, I had more money to go out and do more drugs because I wasn’t spending the same amount.”
Things took a dark turn for Zac when he turned to shooting heroin, but he said in hindsight, he’s grateful for the experience because it got him clean sooner.
Zac explained, “As I continued to go into survival mode and needed to reset my tolerance one last time, that is when I found the needle and started shooting heroin. That was something now that I’m really grateful for because it accelerated my bottom. It got me to a deep, dark place quicker than maybe someone who drinks alcohol and that’s how I became a heroin addict. I don’t share this video to trigger anyone.”
The Bachelor Nation star opened up about why he continues to share his story and why he’s made it his purpose in life to help others.
He said, “I share it because it’s my story, it’s my experience and I hope that it’s educational to maybe someone who’s getting surgery or maybe someone who has been hooked on opiates. Or maybe there’s someone out there using heroin today and they are really ashamed of it, because I’m not ashamed of it. It’s part of my story and I lean into it and I try to be helpful.”
We know that Zac being so vulnerable and honest about his experience will help so many others.
