Krystal Nielson Discusses Perimenopause Diagnosis at 35 on Her Journey to Conceive Baby #2
Opening up.
Fans first met Krystal Nielson on Season 22 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to appear on Season 5 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
If you’ve been keeping up with Krystal, you know that in late 2020, she found love off-screen with her husband Miles Bowles, with whom she shares a daughter, Andara Rose.
Krystal just got candid in a new YouTube video about her and Miles’ journey trying to conceive their second child together.
In the video, Krystal discusses her shocking perimenopause diagnosis, which she received right after her honeymoon.
Krystal started off her video by saying, “I’m going to update you on my fertility journey. It’s not what I thought I’d be sharing this week. This week I thought I would be announcing my pregnancy, my birthday week. That was the plan, and I guess that just wasn’t the plan for us. When we got engaged, my husband Miles and I had already been talking about trying for another baby because we had our daughter.”
The Bachelor Nation star continued on, saying, “I had just turned 35 and I didn’t want to wait too much longer because I know egg quality and egg count are in mind, but I still feel so young. Earlier into the year, I had a pregnancy scare, so we decided to plan our wedding first and then do a honeymoon baby. Leading up to our wedding, it worked out miraculously that I would be ovulating on our honeymoon. I pulled out my maternity clothes. I was just nesting and preparing for another baby to come into our life.”
But leading up to her wedding, Krystal said she noticed her cycle was really off, she started growing gray hairs, and she developed terrible migraines.
She worked with her doctor and a fertility specialist to take a Dutch hormone test and her fertility specialist called her during her honeymoon to let her know that her hormones were “wacky” and that they should chat when she got home.
Krystal said, “We were on our honeymoon. We were trying to conceive. I was supposed to be ovulating. Let’s just say there were other plans in store for me. When we got back, I met with Alyssa to go over my results because I was getting the vibe that it was not good. She said, ‘I’ve never seen someone’s hormones so low.’ I was literally almost zero on estrogen and zero on progesterone. And my stress hormones were all the way at 100%. Stress is going to shut off sex hormones.”
Krystal was told that based on her test results, she was in “perimenopause.”
She discussed the diagnosis and got emotional, saying, “That was really shocking. A lot to unpack there for me. She told me based on the results from the snapshot we were seeing when I took the test that it would be a miracle for me to get pregnant. There I was thinking I would be taking a pregnancy test in the next week, so that was not at all the news I wanted to hear.”
Krystal went on, saying, “For so long I’ve wanted to have another baby and I’d been putting it off, and you hear the stories about it might take longer than you think, don’t wait. But as a new mom, I was just trying to get my life back on track and figure out who I was in this new version of me. I was really sad and I cried a lot for like 10 days. I just remember grabbing my daughter and holding her and just feeling so grateful.”
At the time, Krystal learned that based on her test results, her body might not be able to sustain a pregnancy even if she did get pregnant.
So she’s taking her followers along her health journey as she takes the rest of the year to prioritize her mental and physical well-being.
Then come January, Krystal said she and Miles will start again on their fertility journey and she will keep fans updated with their decisions.
We know Krystal sharing her story will help others going through something similar. Check out her full video above.
