‘The Bachelor’s’ Lexi Discusses Her Endometriosis and Surgery Experience: ‘Time to Bring More Awareness’
Sharing her story.
Bachelor Nation fans are getting to know Lexi on Season 28 of “The Bachelor” as she looks for love with Joey.
Lexi has opened up on the show about her endometriosis diagnosis and she just took to Instagram to share more of her story.
She started off by saying, “It is honestly pretty emotional to talk about. My diagnosis and journey to a diagnosis with endometriosis. For me, endometriosis presented itself when I was quite young. I always had incredibly painful periods. Once I was in high school and college, I had horrible pelvic pain, really bad lower back pain, and it continued to get worse and worse. Doctors would give me medications to help subside the pain. They put me on birth control pills at a really young age, but nothing helped me feel better.”
After college, Lexi shared that she moved to San Francisco, where her symptoms got a lot worse.
Lexi said, “It got to the point where my symptoms were so bad that I would pass out at work from pain. I couldn’t sit at a desk and do my job. I went to multiple doctor’s appointments a week to try to gain an understanding of what was going on with my body.”
She went on, explaining, “I was diagnosed with conditions that I never had. I was told that the pain I was experiencing was in my head and it was rooted in anxiety and depression and that I needed to see a psychiatrist. All of this truly made me shut down and almost believe that my pain wasn’t real.”
Eventually, Lexi said she was constantly doubled over in pain and wasn’t able to function or have a normal life, so she decided to move to New York City to be closer to her family.
She recounted, “When I moved to New York, my symptoms got 100x worse. I was rushed to the emergency room multiple times while I was working at the GAP headquarters in NY. I was losing a lot of blood. I had really bad abdominal distention.”
Lexi said she would constantly look around four to five months pregnant and said it felt like there was “barbed wire surrounding my pelvis.”
Thankfully, she finally met a doctor at New York University that changed her life.
The Bachelor Nation star said, “This surgeon truly changed my life and I am so grateful. She listened to me and validated that my pain is 100% real and she had a very strong hunch that I had endo. Endometriosis cannot be diagnosed through an MRI or x-ray or CT scan or any lab tests. It has to be diagnosed through a laparoscopic surgery. These surgeries are usually quite expensive and it’s a diagnostic surgery.”
She first had an MRI and saw she did have some thickening of uterine ligaments, so she ultimately ended up having surgery.
During her surgery, Lexi’s doctor was able to extract her endo at the root.
She said, “It was the most emotional, validating day I’ve ever had in my entire life. When the doctor walked into the room, she told me that I had stage IV deep infiltrating endometriosis all over my pelvic cavity and it even spread to other organs, I finally felt like my pain was validated. I have been suffering for over a decade and I was turned away from doctors and I finally had the answer as to what was going on with my body.”
And while Lexi was happy to finally have answers, reality also set in with her diagnosis.
She said, “I’ve always wanted to be a mother and a big part of endometriosis is potential infertility. I just remember bursting into tears. They were happy tears and they were also sad tears. It’s a day I’ll never forget, but it’s a day that changed my life.”
Now she finds ways to manage her pain and create plans to help her have a better chance of having children in the future.
Lexi wanted to share her story because 1 in 10 women have endometriosis and there is no cure.
Even though she’s had surgery, she still deals with flares every single week, with some weeks being worse than others.
She wanted to go on “The Bachelor” to show herself and others that “Living with an invisible illness does not mean that you cannot live your life and you can’t go after your dreams.”
We know Lexi sharing her story will help so many others, and we’re continuing to love learning more about her as she looks for love with Joey.
Make sure to tune in to “The Bachelor” on Monday nights on ABC or stream later on Hulu to see more from Lexi.
