Abigail Heringer Explains What It Sounds Like to Hear with a Cochlear Implant
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Abigail Heringer on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to find love with Noah Erb on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
During her time on the Bachelor Nation shows, Abigail opened up about her hearing loss and how she wears a cochlear implant.
And she’s been continuing to educate her followers about being deaf and wearing cochlear implants on social media.
This week, Abigail took to her series “Hear Me Out” to discuss what hearing with a cochlear implant sounds like.
Alongside the video, Abi wrote, “A little insight into what my cochlear implant sounds like!”
She started off the video by explaining, “I got my first implant when I was two years old on my left side and I don’t really remember what the activation process was like or really what it sounded like in the beginning. I did get implanted on my right side when I was in middle school and I do remember what that sounded like. This is different for everybody, but I remember, one of the first things was that the pressure from the magnet was super uncomfortable.”
Abigail went on sharing her experience, saying, “And then it was all beeps. What I mean by this is each sound and syllable was just a beep. So ‘hear me out’ is three syllables but all I’d hear would be beep beep beep. This is what I mean when I say that a cochlear implant is not a quick transition. It’s not like putting on glasses and you can see clearly right away. To be quite honest, those beeping noises are so annoying because that is all you can hear.”
The Bachelor Nation star revealed that she ended up not keeping her second implant and just stuck with the one on her right side.
She said, “Part of the reason why I didn’t keep my second implant was because the beeping noises were making it so hard to hear out of my left side that was already trained. I believe they recommend now that you get bilaterally implanted at the same time to avoid that issue from happening. It can take a couple of months or longer for your brain to become accustomed to these sounds. The beeping will just fade out over time and it will turn into noises.”
She said that this process is done through speech therapy where it’s a ton of repetitive listening and trying to keep your processor on as long as you can during the day.
And now, Abigail shared what hearing with her cochlear implant sounds like today.
She said, “Today with my first implant on my left side that I’ve had for almost 27 years, I would consider the sounds that I’m hearing through it very similar to what you guys are hearing. I don’t consider it to sound robotic or fuzzy or static at all. I can actually pick up on different pitches and tones as well. I don’t have any basis for comparison, which is also really weird to think about. I consider the noises that I hear to be normal and what you guys hear naturally.”
Abigail did note that she was born deaf so she doesn’t have anything to compare what she’s hearing to.
She asked her followers who have lost their hearing as they’ve gotten older and then got a cochlear implant to share in the comments what the difference is like before losing hearing and now.
We love learning from Abigail and know that her continuing to use her platform for such important conversations will help so many others.
