EXCLUSIVE: Rachel Nance Discusses Being a Role Model for ‘Mixed Girls’ and How Bachelorettes Have Supported Her
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans saw Rachel Nance look for love with Joey Graziadei on Season 28 of “The Bachelor.”
This week, we saw her heartbreaking departure from the show and emotional conversation with Joey at "Women Tell All."
During their conversation, Rachel got candid about the online hate, racism, and backlash she’s been receiving online since being on the show.
After "Women Tell All," Rachel stopped by for an exclusive chat with BachelorNation.com where she opened up about all of that and more.
Check out our conversation with Rachel below.
Bachelor Nation: Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, Rachel. We have to start by asking what was it like getting to watch your whole journey with Joey back?
Rachel Nance: Thank you for having me! Gosh, I didn’t realize how emotional I would be watching it all back, it was kind of a struggle to watch it again honestly. I think so many of the moments that were shown between me and Joey were so beautiful and I hope everyone watching got to enjoy those moments as much as I did.
BN: We definitely did. Now that you’ve seen it all unfold, is there anything you would’ve done differently?
RN: Honestly no, I am so proud of myself for doing this. This idea and way of dating is so insane, but at the time, I really pushed myself and I opened up more than I ever thought I could’ve. I wouldn’t change anything that I did. I was very genuine and authentic the whole time and it worked out how it was supposed to.
BN: Yes, that makes sense. And do you feel like you now have the closure you needed with Joey?
RN: Yeah. It’s such a unique way of breaking up, because you don’t talk to them after, so you don’t fully get closure until you see them again, which I got tonight. I know confidently that it ended the way it should’ve. As emotional as it was, it was still one of my favorite moments I had with Joey. You could really feel how much love we had for each other and how true our friendship was. Everything we felt was real. In that moment it was very sad and I wanted it to be me at the end, but from the beginning we were a slow burn that always had so much fun together. So yeah, looking back, weirdly our break up was one of my highlights with him.
BN: That really is so special. Do you think the experience dating Joey has changed how you’ll navigate dating in the future?
RN: Well, I definitely will be going back to traditionally dating with just one man and one woman. I don’t want to do 32 people again! My dad is the guy who has set the standards high for dating, but after being in a relationship with Joey, that standard has definitely gotten higher. Joey taught me that I can feel safe with someone and I can get what I deserve. Moving forward that is what I’m going to be expecting. I’ve always wanted someone who is a good listener and kind of the opposite of me in some ways and I found those qualities in Joey. So moving forward, I want those same feelings and someone who will be there for me and support me with my career or anything I do moving forward. I also want to be there for them and we can create that safe environment together to come home to.
BN: We know you’ll find that! After the past few weeks, have you been able to connect with fellow Bachelor Nation stars about your experience online?
RN: Oh yes. Shout out to Charity Lawson. She is my girl for life. She is amazing. Charity has definitely been a driving force for me. She has pushed me to keep my head above keyboard warriors who come at me. She told me to stay true to who I am and speak my truth. She also said it’s ok to be upset with what people are saying, but she has my back. Also, Rachel Recchia has been so sweet. I have been getting a lot of love, which is so nice because these past few weeks have been tough ones for me. It has been very hard. The support from those women in Bachelor Nation has been such a game changer for me.
BN: We’re so glad you were able to connect with them. It’s so terrible, online hate is never okay. Amid the negativity, have you been able to connect with anyone online in a positive way?
RN: Absolutely yes. The negativity is always just louder. But a lot of people messaged me after night one thanking me for wearing my hair curly. It’s so simple just to wear my natural hair down, but to realize that impacted somebody. As a mixed girl, I didn’t get to see someone that looked like me on TV when I was growing up. It’s a dream come true that I get to be that person for someone else. A huge thing going into this was that I wanted to stay true to myself and represent my culture and family to the best of my ability and I feel like I did that. I hope that everyone back home in Hawaii and the Phillipines and all the people I represent, I hope they see that. If I can be that girl that a little kid is able to look up to, I am so proud to be that woman. Unfortunately, being that example does come with downsides, but I know the supporters are out there.
BN: Yes they are! Thank you so much for sharing and thank you for chatting with us, Rachel!
