Serena Pitt Gets Emotional Talking to Rachel Nance About Hateful Comments on Social Media
Getting candid.
During Rachel Nance’s chat with Joey Graziadei at the “Women Tell All” special this week, she opened up about the hateful messages she received throughout the season.
Rachel discusses the racial slurs in both her comments and DMs and got emotional as she shared how it impacted her and her family.
Now, Rachel stopped by the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast where she talked more about the negativity.
She said, “I would definitely love to address the comments that people have been making targeting me, especially after Hometowns. I’m not one to really speak up for myself, so doing that was a huge thing for me. Coming from my Asian background, we’re taught not to take up space and not to speak up and to just be quiet. I am really trying to encourage anyone who looks like me or any person of color to take up that space and to speak up. I think people are so quick to think that it doesn’t affect any of us and I’m not saying that the comments I’m getting are all tearing me down, it’s just very frustrating.”
Rachel went on, saying, “I wish more people would be kinder with their words and know that their words have weight to them. I am still just a normal person. I went on the show and I think going on the show takes a lot of courage and bravery because there is so much that you go through. People getting mad about my skin color or how I look and dropping all these names like ‘jungle Asian’ and all these slurs are coming from left field all because I got a rose. I wish people would just know that if you watch reality TV, these people are real on reality TV.”
Co-host Joe Amabile chimed in with his thoughts on the hate Rachel has received.
He said, “Just don’t be a f*cking d*ck. It’s actually terrible. It’s insane. You have to expect some of it, but in your case it’s so unwarranted and I feel for you. It really sucks. I feel like you are in a great headspace and I would focus on all the good that does come from this, because there is a lot of it. Hopefully the haters go away or grow up a little bit. You’re an amazing person, just know that. F*ck those people, for lack of a better word.”
His co-host and wife Serena Pitt got emotional as she related to Rachel’s experience with racist messages.
Serena said, “If you want to watch a show where it’s only people that look like you, you’re probably not going to be able to turn on your TV and you probably shouldn’t step outside your house because that’s not how the world works. The hateful comments are a struggle for everyone in this franchise and it’s something that we as past contestants and me as a woman of color can definitely relate to your experience to an extent. Thank you for your bravery and sharing your culture and sharing your family and your traditions on the show.”
She went on, saying, “It does take so much bravery and you are putting yourself out there for people to love on and accept and also for people to criticize and say horrific things in your DMs. Sadly that is part of being on this show. I hope that you know that the good that you do and the people you touch is so much greater. I got a little choked up there for a second, I’m sorry. The good that you do is greater than the people that are saying hurtful things to you.”
We couldn’t agree more and we’re continuing to send Rachel love.
