Kelsey Toussant Gets Candid About Her Relationship with Her Dad and How ‘The Bachelor’ Helped Them Heal
Keeping it real.
Bachelor Nation fans got to know and love Kelsey Toussant as she looked for love with Joey Graziadei on Season 28 of “The Bachelor.”
During her time on the show, Kelsey opened up to Joey about her dad’s faith as a Jehovah’s Witness and how he cut her out of his life after she went against the family’s religious beliefs.
She told Joey, “Because I chose to go to college, he didn’t support that decision at all. Anyone who was in his household had to be in the religion, and so I wasn’t allowed to be there anymore… and that hurt.”
Now, Kelsey is stopping by the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast and opening up to co-hosts Serena Pitt and Joe Amabile about her relationship with her father and where they stand today.
The co-hosts asked Kelsey if she was nervous getting candid with Joey on the show about her strained relationship with her dad.
She said, “I was very nervous opening up about my relationship with my dad with Joey. Honestly, he’s only the second person I’ve talked to about that. He’s literally one of two, and the first person I talked to about it, I was engaged to him. So to have this conversation come up this early in a relationship and at all was a lot for me. I was very nervous going into it.”
But despite the nerves, Kelsey went on sharing how grateful she was for Joey’s response. She said, “I think Joey received it very well. He is an amazing listener. I think he has a great way of understanding people even if he doesn’t know exactly what you’re going through. He has a great way of understanding that it was something I was dealing with and he could see how it affected me and my relationships. He was very open to that. I could tell that I could trust him with who I am and I appreciated that from him.”
Joe asked Kelsey how her relationship is with her dad now after opening up about it so publicly.
She smiled as she said, “My relationship with my father today is really good. I am so shocked, honestly. We have been working on it for a while, but it’s never gotten to a point where it feels like we have an actual relationship. It’s different when you talk to someone or call someone than when you have an actual relationship with someone that’s building. That’s where we’re at now, and I didn’t know if we could get there, but it’s there, though.”
Serena asked what her dad thought about the episode where he was discussed and Kelsey said she made sure they watched that conversation together.
Kelsey said, “He watched the conversation I had with Joey with me. I asked if he could come over and watch it together because I wanted to see how he felt. I also wanted to be with him in that moment if he had questions or needed anything from me or if he had anything to say to me. So we watched it, and he was a little emotional, but overall, he was like, ‘We’ve grown from that place and I hope that we can get better and continue to get better and all you did was share your truth.’ He has been very supportive and very honest with how our relationship has been in the past and how he wants it to go in the future.”
And Kelsey’s dad actually ended up being her date to the “After the Final Rose” finale taping. The two sat together in the audience for the live show.
Kelsey said, “I was shocked that he came with me. He doesn’t do TV. He’s very private and he’s not even on social media. I didn’t know if he was going to actually come, but he came and he took a shot too, which I was very surprised by. I was like, ‘Dad!’ It’s great to know that even though we may disagree on a lot of things and he may have seen my life going somewhere totally different than where it is now, he can still be there and support me no matter what.”
She went on, saying, “Even if his vision of what his child was supposed to be and do is never going to happen and vice versa. I think my dad is a human and he makes mistakes, but I am going to love him regardless. So for us to be there in that moment and for him to support me through it no matter what, I love him for that.”
