Trista Sutter Discusses Experiencing Slut Shaming as the First Bachelorette: ‘I Got Called Every Name in the Book’
Getting candid.
This week, the very first Bachelorette, Trista Sutter, stopped by the “Bachelor Happy Hour: Golden Hour” podcast and opened up to co-hosts Susan Noles and Kathy Swarts about everything from family to “The Bachelorette” and more.
When Trista shared that she celebrated her 30th birthday during her time as the Bachelorette, Kathy and Susan teased her, asking if she wore her birthday suit for any of the men.
Trista revealed that her experience with intimacy was kind of the opposite on her season.
The former Bachelorette started off by saying, “You probably don’t remember this or may not have been paying attention to it at the time. When my show came out, it was actually very controversial. I got called every name in the book. People said I was going to look like a slut or that I was going to be a ho because it was one girl and 25 guys.”
She went on, sharing, “Because of that, I really held back in terms of physicality with the men. There was one guy named Jamie who asked me if he could have a kiss one night and I said maybe just on the cheek. Everyone kisses on the first night now! It’s crazy. I feel like I was very reserved because I was very aware of the public perception. Also, my family was watching and whatnot.”
Kathy and Susan also asked Trista what she would do or say if she could go back and change any of her dating past or give her past self advice.
Trista said, “I don’t wish I could go back because I am where I am because of all the things that happened to me. I wouldn’t change anything in that respect, but I wish I would’ve known to believe more in myself and invest more in myself and not just give in to a guy because he was a guy I wanted to date. I wanted to be true to myself and not settle.”
She continued, “I just wanted to date the boys I was dating because it was fun and I could go to dances with them or whatever, and I feel like I was just settling into a relationship because that’s what I thought I needed, but it’s okay to be alone. It’s okay to cultivate your personality and your self-worth before you are in a relationship.”
Trista says she continues to share that advice with her two kids and revealed whether she would be open to them going on “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette.”
