Nancy Hulkower Reveals How Daisy Kent Helped Her Accept Her Diabetes Diagnosis
Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation fans got to know Nancy Hulkower on Season 1 of “The Golden Bachelor,” and she’s been keeping fans updated with her life on social media ever since.
This week, Nancy stopped by the “Bachelor Happy Hour: Golden Hour,” podcast where she caught up with her BFFs Susan Noles and Kathy Swarts.
During their conversation, Nancy got vulnerable about her health, which she said she rarely talks about and didn’t bring up while filming the show.
Nancy said, “A little-known fact is that I have diabetes. I have type 1 diabetes and I take insulin. The producers and people on the show knew it, but I didn’t really put it out there on the show. I have to say that Daisy from Joey’s season of ‘The Bachelor’ talked about her cochlear implant and it certainly gave me the impetus to be more open about diabetes.”
Nancy said Daisy sharing her story about hearing loss and Lyme disease helped her feel more confident in her chronic condition after a bad dating experience.
She shared, “I unfortunately have someone that I dated briefly who said, ‘I’m not interested in dating anyone who has any chronic health issues.’ My point to that is I’m 61 and as we all get older and continue to get older, more things will happen. More people have things. I have diabetes. There’s nothing I can do about that, but I manage it. I can live a great life. I can ski, I do Pilates, I manage my diabetes.”
Nancy explained that Daisy being so vulnerable really changed her perspective and has made a difference on how she will go about her health journey in the future.
She said, “Daisy manages her cochlear implant and what goes along with that. I think it’s important to know that things happen. That’s life. You can’t do anything about it. All you can do is manage what you have, and that doesn’t mean you have to hide or stop.”
Nancy continued, “I was always afraid to put it out there and it was truly Daisy who gave me the confidence to move forward and be open about having diabetes. Because of her, I’m also getting a small pump that I’ll wear on my arm or my leg, which is no big deal. It makes managing diabetes even easier.”
We love this Bachelor Nation special moment and know that both Daisy and Nancy speaking out about their struggles will continue to help others going through something similar.
