Ben Higgins Shares the Moment When He & Lauren Bushnell Realized Their Relationship Was Over
Looking back.
Bachelor Nation fans saw Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell find love and get engaged on Season 20 of “The Bachelor.”
The two eventually went their separate ways and both have since found love off-screen and married their respective partners.
But before splitting up, the two filmed a spin-off Bachelor Nation show called “Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?”
Now, Ben stopped by the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast and opened up to co-hosts Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt about the moment he and Lauren realized their relationship wouldn’t work out while filming that show.
Ben shared that they were asked to do a televised wedding while filming their spin-off.
He said, “Obviously there is a good paycheck associated with that, so you’re like, ‘Hmm,’ kinda if we’re going to actually get married. We had already been struggling for about a month. We were in couples counseling and really trying to make it work, but we were not getting there and we were butting heads.”
Ben continued, explaining, “We showed up to being asked about a televised wedding already not really talking and feeling more like work associates. We were living in the same house, but we weren’t really speaking to each other off camera because the cameras would leave at 9 p.m. and we were exhausted.”
Ben shared that the moment driving home from being asked to do a televised wedding was when they both had to face the truth.
He said, “We would just be dead tired and we hadn’t talked to each other really truly in weeks. When they asked, we sat in the car ride saying are we going to do this because if we were going to get married, we better do it on national television, no question.”
Ben added, “We both said in that moment that we didn’t think we were going to get married. That was one of the final episodes. They were done filming a week later and we tried to make it work a little bit longer, then finally it was over. If they filmed for two months, it was about a month and a half into it that we were calling it. It was a weird time.”
Shortly after, the two ended up going their separate ways, despite it being a very painful breakup for both of them.
Ben shared, “As soon as the cameras dropped, I flew to Chicago for a business meeting and I remember talking to her on the phone and we knew this was done and we couldn’t make it work because it wasn’t healthy for either of us. We should just try to move on.”
He went on, saying, “I told her I’d be gone for a week for work and that it would be great if she was gone when I got back because I didn’t think I could see her in person. It would hurt too much and we both cared that much still. She agreed and her mom flew out to help pack up her stuff.”
