Jenn Tran Discusses Receiving ‘Racist Comments’ and the False Narratives About Her Bachelorette Journey
Keeping it real.
Bachelor Nation fans are getting excited for Jenn Tran’s highly anticipated season premiere of “The Bachelorette” in just a few weeks.
As we are counting down the days, Jenn stopped by the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, where she opened up to host Alex Cooper about her excitement for the season to air, the negative comments she’s received, and how she feels about some of the false narratives swirling around about her season.
Jenn started off the pod by saying, “I’m honestly really excited for people to just see it. I feel like this whole chapter of my life happened and I haven’t seen anything from it yet, so it feels like did it really happen or not? Obviously it did, so I’m really excited for everyone to see it. There are a lot of opinions on the seasons and I know how amazing it’s going to be and what a dream it was for me.”
Alex asked Jenn how she felt about some of the negativity that she saw online after coming back from filming.
Jenn got candid, saying, “There’s no running around it. I came back from filming and there were a lot of people who were wanting somebody else to be the Bachelorette or wishing that I was ‘American.’ There’s a lot of racism around it too and just a lot of people who want to have input on it and wish it was someone else. I think that you just can’t win.”
Jenn also opened up more about some of the racism she’s encountered being the first ever Asian American Bachelorette.
She explained, “In a weird way, it makes me feel validated that there needs to be change. I lived my whole life having people tell me that racism doesn’t exist and that Asians don’t have to deal with it... To have things said about me online, particularly about my race, just validates the fact that there is so much hate in people’s hearts still. It’s still such a prevalent thing to this day, so I’m happy to take on the brunt of it if it means that I’m making a change for people that will come after me.”
And Alex also asked Jenn how she felt about people making comments about wanting to see Maria Georgas or Daisy Kent as the Bachelorette.
Jenn said, “I was really disappointed to see all of that. There are a lot of narratives out there and they’re not necessarily the truth. The show has been going on for over 20 years and every season there are multiple people in contention for the role. Multiple people are being interviewed, doing meetings, doing fittings, and filming intro packages and it’s never really you until it’s you.”
She went on, saying, “That’s why I was a little disappointed. The narratives out there aren’t necessarily true. When you look at the history of it all, there are always multiple people. It was disappointing to see all these narratives when I got back that took away from what my journey was.”
Thankfully, Jenn said she and the other girls are “all good” and they’ve all been mature about it and she’s grateful for their support.
We can’t wait to see how Jenn’s season unfolds. Make sure to tune in to her season premiere on July 8 at 8 p.m. on ABC!
