Katie Thurston Opens Up About Sexual Assault and Receives Support from Bachelor Nation: ‘My Pain Has Purpose’
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans got to know Katie Thurston during her time on Season 25 of “The Bachelor” and Season 17 of “The Bachelorette.”
Now, the former Bachelorette is taking to social media to share her recent traumatic experience with sexual assault and the steps she’s been taking.
Katie shared a series of slides detailing what happened to her and started off by writing, “My pain has purpose. My purpose has power. I want to focus on the positive. The justice system continues to let down victims every day. I refused to feel defeated in the strength it took me to be an advocate for myself. I hope my experience will help those feel the strength and support they need.”
Katie said she isn’t ready to share her full story just yet, but she did want to share the resources that saved her life.
She wrote, “I called 9-1-1 to report my rape. They sent an officer to take my statement and then drove me to a special medical center to perform an exam. I had two women with me. One was the nurse and the other was my advocate. They were kind, nurturing, and patient. I felt like a small lost child who was vulnerable and scared. They thoroughly explained the process, asking for consent along the way, and allowing me to decline or change my mind at any time.”
Katie explained that her first priority was her safety and well-being, so she had blood drawn to check for STIs, drugs, and blood alcohol concentration. She was also given Plan B, a shot for bacterial infections, drugs to treat possible STIs, and medication to treat possible HIV exposure.
She shared that this was all provided to her at no cost, regardless of whether she had insurance.
Where Katie lived in San Diego offered her an online tracker for her exam and she said it took four months to complete the cycle.
During this waiting period, she worked with a therapist who specializes in treating victims of sexual assault and engaged other community resources.
Katie also shared a book that was helpful for her during this time and said she “did everything I should have done as a victim of rape.”
She said she shared her texts, calls, photos, videos, names, witnesses, locations, time stamps, surveillance footage, and DNA, and was still warned that “a guilty verdict is hard in criminal court.”
So while Katie said she was “stopped” in her fight, she shared that, “This is not a loss to me. I am safe. I am loved. I am supported,” and added, “This is yet another loss in a broken system. Change happens in failure and the justice system failed me. It continues to fail thousands every single day, but do not give up.”
Many of Katie’s fellow Bachelor Nation stars filled the comments of her post with love.
Kaitlyn Bristowe wrote, “I know we have talked offline, but just wanted to let you know that sharing this online matters. I’m so sorry you had to go through this. I love you.”
Susie Evans added, “Katie, I am so so sorry that this happened and that the justice system failed you. You are so loved and we support you. Thank you for sharing to help others not feel as alone.”
And Tayshia Adams said, “Standing with you if you ended anything. You are loved and supported.”
Katie commented back saying, “I want to thank everyone who DM’d me. I spent the day offline and with loved ones.”
She also shared resources like RAINN that were helpful to her, so if you or someone you know needs these resources, click here.
We’re thinking of Katie and continuing to send her love during this time.
