Colton Underwood’s 'Bachelor' Fence Jump Named One of 2019’s Top TV Episodes
Bachelor Nation brought the drama in 2019.
From Colton Underwood’s season of “The Bachelor” to Hannah Brown’s journey on “The Bachelorette” and the groundbreaking season of “Bachelor in Paradise,” we’ve seen our fair share of unforgettable moments this year. With 2020 on the horizon, it’s the ideal time to reflect on what pop culture brought us over the past 12 months.
One such moment came from Colton and Cassie Randolph’s breakup on Season 23 of “The Bachelor.” TV Guide published its list of the top 15 episodes of television of 2019, and Colton’s fence jump landed at the number two spot. It was the the only reality TV show to make the cut.
TV Guide wrote, “Unlike a certain other hugely popular fantasy series, ‘The Bachelor’s’ highly anticipated climax actually lived up to the hype. And not only did it deliver, it was actually even a little bit better than expected.”
The review also commended the show for having “the power to surprise and create water cooler moments that conquer the entertainment news cycle based on things that happen on the show, not just off-screen controversies.”
The heartbreaking scene began during the evening portion of Cassie and Colton’s Fantasy Suite date. Cassie tells him, “I don’t want to see you leave here not having what you came here for.”
He replies, “But if it’s not with the person at the end of this I feel the strongest for and with the most potential with, then it’s not worth it.”
Cassie says moments later, “Today was perfect. I love you so much, but I’m not in love, you know what I mean?”
Colton tells Cassie, “I want to be with you. I love you.”
She says before leaving, “I feel like staying here is making the wrong decision for me.”
They part ways and Colton, needing time to himself, strips off his microphone, ignores Chris Harrison’s calls, and expertly jumps over a very tall fence.
Chris Harrison utters, “He just jumped the f—king fence.”
Colton and Cassie ultimately got back together (and just celebrated their one-year anniversary), but it didn’t happen without some lone, late-night wandering in the Portuguese countryside and many, many tears.
Pilot Peter Weber takes the helm as the next Bachelor, and his season premieres on January 6, 2020, at 8 p.m. on ABC.
