This Day in Bachelor Nation History: Sean Lowe & Colton Underwood’s Seasons Begin
The beginning of January is always a busy time for Bachelor Nation. For the past 12 seasons, “The Bachelor” has premiered during the first two weeks of the month, making the start of the new year all the more interesting.
Season 22 of “The Bachelor” with Arie Luyendyk Jr. aired January 1, 2018; Ben Flajnik (Season 16) and Nick Viall (Season 21) premiered January 2, 2012, and 2017, respectively; Brad Womack’s second time around as the Bachelor (Season 15) started on January 3; Jake Pavelka (Season 14) and Ben Higgins (Season 20) aired January 4, 2010, and 2016, respectively; Season 13 with Jason Mesnick premiered January 5, 2009; and, on January 6, 2014, viewers began watching Juan Pablo Galavis’ season (18), and in 2020, the most recent one with Peter Weber.
January 7 brought us the starts of two successful “Bachelor” love stories: Sean Lowe (Season 17) and Colton Underwood (Season 23).
Southern gentleman Sean won over hearts on Emily Maynard’s season of “The Bachelorette.” After getting sent home in the final three, he got his chance at redemption as the Bachelor. He and Catherine Giudici fell in love, and their chemistry and undeniable affection was palpable onscreen. Sean proposed to Catherine in Thailand and they tied the knot January 26, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California.
Sean and Catherine ended 2019 and rang in the new decade with a very special guest: their new daughter, Mia! Catherine gave birth to her on December 23. All members of the Lowe family are basking in Mia’s presence, especially her big brothers Samuel and Isaiah.

Colton’s tenure as the Bachelor began exactly one year ago.
The former professional football player took the season and his fate into his own hands when he broke up with Tayshia Adams and Hannah Godwin to fully pursue his relationship with Cassie Randolph. Cassie sent herself home during their Fantasy Suite date because she was unsure about her feelings for Colton and whether she loved him as much as he loved her. Colton, in a moment of heartbreak and frustration, jumped over a fence in Portugal and walked away in order to take a few moments to gather his thoughts.
Colton ultimately won Cassie back and the two have been incredibly happy ever since. He moved to Los Angeles to be closer to her, and he even surprised Cassie with a trip to St. Lucia for their one-year anniversary. They’ve shut down breakup rumors and continue to showcase their affection in a number of ways, including a customized blanket with photos of them on it.

In November, Cassie responded to someone in an Instagram Q&A who asked “What’s your favorite thing about Colton?!” She wrote back, “It’s hard to narrow it down to just 1 thing! He has the biggest heart. He treats everyone with kindness and is a hard worker, which is very attractive to me.”
She added, “And we always have the best time together no matter what we are doing.”
