Tanner Tolbert Opens Up About Bonding with His Son and Being Called a 'Bad Dad'
Tanner Tolbert no longer wants to feel like a "bad dad."
The "Bachelor in Paradise" alumni posted a photo of himself and his 7-month-old son Brooks on Instagram and wrote a long caption about fatherhood and his initial struggles to bond with Brooks. Tanner began by referring to a comment he made on his wife Jade Roper’s podcast "about how it was taking me a minute to build a bond with Brooks after he was born."
The remark instantly sparked some backlash, which greatly affected the father of two. He wrote, "I felt kind of ashamed as I read them... that I shouldn’t feel that way... or that I was a 'bad dad' for saying that." Tanner admitted he was "glad" he spoke about the subject "because it was the truth and that’s okay."

Tanner went on to discuss his relationship with his 2-year-old daughter Emmy. He wrote, "After Brooks was born I found myself comparing my bond with him to the bond I had with Emmy and I think that was unfair for me to do to myself. My relationship with Emmy had built up over a couple years whereas I had just met Brooks and as a man I didn’t just spend 9 months being pregnant with him, building a bond that way, like my wife did."
He said that babies are "a lot harder than I imagined" and compared his time as a dad now versus when Emmy was a newborn. "I was away at work during most of Emmys time as a newborn so in a way this is my first experience being around it 24/7," Tanner wrote. "After he was born I found myself taking the easier route in parenthood, handling most of Emmys needs and letting Jade handle most of Brooks’."

The 32-year-old explained that bonding with Brooks has "gotten easier" because "Brooks has started to show such personality and the older he’s gotten I feel more equipped to take care of him."
He added, "I love him the exact same as I do Emmy and I’d do anything for either of my kids."
Tanner contemplated why he posted the anecdote, saying, "I’m not exactly sure why I’m posting this... maybe it’s to make myself feel better... and not feel like a 'bad dad' for feeling the way I did... or maybe it’s just because I wanted to share my feelings in case you, or your partner feels the same way I did."

Just like Tanner opened up about his parenting obstacles, Jade, too, has been transparent about the ups and downs for her. In December, for instance, she revealed she had a "really hard" time feeding Brooks. She shared on Instagram that Brooks went in for his checkup and he was "in the 5th percentile," which caused the pediatrician to be "very concerned about his weight gain."
Jade wrote, "I’ve never felt more like a failure. The feelings of guilt that my baby was aching for food and nutrition, and I didn’t know it, consumed me."
Tanner and Jade are each other’s biggest supporters, just like they are for their kids.
