Katie Thurston Opens Up About Being Sex-Positive and Introducing Matt James to the Other 'MJ'
After Monday night’s episode of “The Bachelor,” Bachelor Nation is even more abuzz with support for this season’s unapologetically sex-positive contestant Katie Thurston.
The outgoing TikTok creator impressed Matt James while reciting a provocative story during a group date inspired by host Chris Harrison’s steamy romance novel “The Perfect Letter.” While chatting with Rachel Lindsay and Becca Kufrin for the latest episode of “Bachelor Happy Hour,” Katie opened up about her open-minded approach to discussing sex.
“It wasn’t some agenda that I had coming on to the show. It’s just who I am and who I’ve been this whole time. It wasn’t until after the fact that I realized how big of a deal it was — which excites me because I do believe it’s 2021 and women should be comfortable talking about their sexuality,” said the stunning Washington native.
“I appreciate being comfortable being able to talk about it,” she continued. “Hopefully that means other women will soon start to open up a little bit because being sex-positive is important in a relationship, [the relationship you have with] yourself, in your self-care, and so many different things, especially in this [ongoing COVID-19] pandemic.”
As viewers will recall, Katie applauded her castmates for boldly revealing their intimate fantasies to Matt after the group date wrapped. On “Bachelor Happy Hour,” Becca asked Katie if she felt like a “champion” for women who may have been nervous about the assignment.
“I wouldn’t call myself a champion necessarily, but people knew I was going to go all out with this one — especially because I had PTSD from not getting to go on the evening portion of the group date [during Week 1],” she responded. “So every time, I’m like, ‘I gotta go all out.’ So I’m sure that kind of helped the women, knowing, like, ‘Hey, even if mine’s a little vanilla, we know Katie’s setting the bar over here.’”
She added, “We had a good time, though. We were all very comfortable having these conversations. That was a fun date.”
Katie first captured “Bachelor” fans’ attention on the Season 25 premiere when she introduced Matt to her purple sparkly vibrator during her limo entrance. Once inside Pennsylvania’s Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, she proceeded to proudly flaunt the scene-stealing sex toy in front of her fellow suitresses, even tapping it on the shoulder of Mari Pepin. (Katie later named the device after contestant MJ Snyder.)
“For me, it actually summarized me perfectly. Our time is so short, and I could do nothing but be myself,” Katie said of her decision to let the other “MJ” tag along on night one. “I knew Matt is religious. I know I don’t know him personally, so I knew it could very well send me home. And I would have no regrets because it really summarizes who I am as a person, my sense of humor, my confidence, my sexual empowerment for females.”
Katie said she was relieved when Matt reacted positively. “I didn’t know what to expect when I did my little stunt, but he laughed,” she recalled. “And so I just felt this huge weight lifted off of me after that. I mean, if you guys saw his laugh, it was just the biggest, most genuine laugh.”
