Tayshia Adams on Meghan Markle Interview and How She Relates to the Former Royal's Biracial Experience
Tayshia Adams shared her thoughts on Meghan Markle’s recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which the Duchess of Sussex claimed that racism pushed her and husband Prince Harry away from the British royal family.
On the latest episode of “Click Bait with Bachelor Nation,” the Season 16 Bachelorette told co-hosts Natasha Parker and Joe Amabile how she relates to Meghan’s experience as a biracial woman.
“When you are biracial, you never feel good enough to relate to a certain ethnicity,” said Tayshia, whose father is Black and mother is Mexican. “Am I Black enough? No. Am I Mexican enough? No. You always are trying to figure out that balance.”
The former franchise lead then pondered how Meghan’s experience within the royal family would have differed had she had a deeper complexion.
“It makes me wonder if Meghan Markle’s skin was a little bit darker, how they would have accepted her — if that would have anything to do with it, to be honest,” Tayshia said of the Los Angeles native, whose mother is Black and father is white.
This isn’t the first time Tayshia has discussed her biracial background. During the February 18 installment of “Click Bait,” she spoke about her groundbreaking turn as the first Black and Latina woman to front “The Bachelorette” and the importance of representation for people of color within Bachelor Nation.
“If I can be that one person that someone can identify with on the show that they’ve never really been able to identify with before, that means a lot to me,” Tayshia said at the time. “We’re making waves, slowly but surely.”
She continued, “I remember being on the show, and I think I’ve said this before, but I used to get a lot of DMs of people — [from] mixed girls in particular — saying, ‘I haven’t seen someone of my race be in a role like you or on TV that I could actually relate to.’ It means a lot to me.”
