Sonya Dakar Tells Rachel & Becca the Crazy Story Behind Her Incredible Skin Care Career
Skin care guru Sonya Dakar stopped by “Bachelor Happy Hour” to impart her expertise on co-hosts Rachel Lindsay and Becca Kufrin.
During her interview, the beauty industry’s self-proclaimed “grand dame of face oils” told Rachel and Becca how her incredible career came to fruition.
According to Sonya, her obsession with skin care began at the age of eight when she became infatuated with the gorgeous glow of a grocery store clerk.
“Her skin was flawless, almost like a mirror. So incredible, like marble,” Sonya recounted. “And she didn’t have any stitch of makeup on her except red lipstick.”
She continued, “And after several visits in her grocery shop, one time I asked her, I said, ‘I want to know what you’re doing for your skin. What is your secret?’ She said, ‘I don’t do anything but oil. I wash my face with oil, and I put oil after.’”
When Sonya got older, she became even more fixated on skin care and went to school to become a licensed esthetician.
“I decided to go back to school later on to be an esthetician just to know the products and how they were going to heal [people’s skin],” she said. “I became addicted to success.”
The epidermis expert elaborated, “Every time a client came with issues, I solved the problem. She went to a doctor, she went to pharmaceuticals, she went to a retail store, she went to a [different] esthetician. But I was the final answer, the light in the dark.”
As Sonya’s acolytes are aware, she is the brains behind a highly lucrative eponymous skin care line that she launched in 1983. Her products are adored by a host of notable names — from Rachel and Becca to Jessica Simpson, Maddie Ziegler, Alexis Ren, and Addison Rae, among others.
