‘Talking It Out’: Thomas Jacobs Opens Up About His Past and Reflects on His ‘Bachelorette’ Experience
Bachelor Nation star Thomas Jacobs stopped by “Talking It Out” to discuss all things “Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” and he also revealed personal details about his past that weren’t discussed during his time on the shows.
Fans met Thomas on Season 17 of “The Bachelorette,” and while he found himself at the center of a lot of drama, he decided to give the process another shot on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
Thomas might have come to the beach this summer with some enemies from Katie Thurston’s season, but he was grateful for the opportunity to meet new people and have another chance at finding love.
The Bachelor Nation star spoke to Bryan Abasolo and Mike Johnson on “Talking It Out” about his life before the shows and how he feels about the experiences now.
He discussed his upbringing as a part of a military family, explaining that there was always so much going on that he tried his best to “lessen the burden” on everyone around him. That meant stepping up and making dinner for his family, getting himself to and from school or practices, or supporting his mom in any way he could.
Thomas revealed how this experience took a toll on his own mental health as he dealt with that while trying to support family members who also struggled with theirs.

He said, “I’ve personally gone through bouts of depression and I’ve had to fight my own demons. Also, my oldest brother, who’s one of my biggest role models, he’s bipolar schizophrenic. When he was going through his own battles, that was right when my dad was gone overseas, and when he came back, he had bad PTSD.”
Thomas explained that his mental health suffered even more after a heavy breakup around four years ago.
He revealed that he and his girlfriend at the time — who he and his family thought was the one — ended up getting pregnant with their child. Unfortunately, Thomas explained, they experienced pregnancy loss, and that trauma negatively impacted their relationship.
“We ended up losing the child, and when that happened, it opened up so many different wounds in so many different places for both of us, and being in a long-distance relationship and trying to fight through really serious traumas, it ended up pulling us apart entirely,” he said.
Thomas said that for years it was difficult for him to be vulnerable and open to love again.
He told Bryan and Mike that he actually had a breakthrough during Katie’s season of “The Bachelorette,” and he realized he was finally ready to find love again.
“That’s something I held with me so tight, and I wish they had showed it on Katie’s season, but I had a breakthrough that I was finally ready to let that go and move forward in my journey to be a husband and my journey to be a father in a direct conversation I had with Katie,” he revealed.
In hindsight, he said, he got caught up in his own experience in the moment, and that’s where he may have fallen short during Katie’s season.

He revealed, “I was in my own head, and I was so worked up to try to be like, ‘All right, well, this is my journey’ that I did not account for the 31 other people here on this journey going through that same exact thing. So what I was most reckless of was coming in with ‘This is my journey’ more so than ‘This is a collective, shared experience that’s going to end with a lot of people trying to find love.’”
As tough as his time was on “The Bachelorette,” Thomas said he’d go through it all again because it showed him that he was ready to find love, and it was the experience he needed to “knock down that last wall to really move forward” with his life.
Because of this, Thomas said he’s happy to get a second chance on “BIP.”
“One of the things that I’m grateful for in ‘Paradise’ is… the people on that beach and the collective, they listened and they acknowledged where people’s viewpoints were coming from, yet they still took the time to get to know me for me, and that was something that was one of my biggest blessings from there.”
