‘Talking It Out’: Serena Pitt Reveals How She Felt When Joe’s Ex Kendall Came to ‘Paradise,’ Plus: Dating on ‘BIP’ vs. in the Real World
Bachelor Nation first met Serena Pitt on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and then she headed down to the beaches of “Bachelor in Paradise” for Season 7 to look for love.
Fans have watched her love story unfold this summer with Joe Amabile, aka Grocery Store Joe. Since very early on in “Paradise,” these two have been one of the strongest couples on the beach and it didn’t seem like anything could break them apart.
Then Joe’s ex Kendall Long, who he met on Season 5 of “Bachelor in Paradise,” came down onto the beach looking for closure in their relationship.
Joe and Kendall dated for nearly two years before splitting up around a year and a half ago. Kendall ended up leaving “Paradise” during Season 7 because it was too difficult for her to watch Joe’s relationship with Serena flourish, but in a new preview, it looks like Kendall is back for the finale.
Serena stopped by the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast and opened up to co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo about how she really felt about the Joe and Kendall situation.
Serena explained, “Joe and I were lucky enough to have time before Kendall arrived to build a foundation for our relationship. In that time, we were able to discuss our past relationships and what we had been through, so we had conversations about his most serious relationship, which was Kendall.”

The Bachelor Nation star went on to explain that she and Joe actually discussed how they would handle Kendall coming to “Paradise” prior to her arrival.
“We had conversations about ‘She’s single, she’s part of this world. Hypothetically, what if she comes down here? What is that going to look like for us?’ So it definitely helped because I had that reassurance going into that situation that he was committed to me, and for him, he wouldn’t be here if that relationship wasn’t done,” Serena explained.
But despite all the conversations she had with Joe, the Toronto native said the situation was still extremely challenging.
Serena revealed, “Going through it, however, was still very difficult. It was very uncomfortable. It was a situation I’ve never been in and I hope to never be in again. I can have compassion for everyone involved in that situation, and the way I chose to handle it was just support Joe in whatever way he needed, for us to be open and honest with each other on how we were feeling, and just put all of my energy and focus onto him because Kendall coming down didn’t change my feelings for Joe.”
Serena said she felt like it only strengthened the couple’s relationship and she “admired how he handled the situation” when it came to how he treated her and Kendall.
And this was just one of many situations Joe and Serena faced in “Paradise” that Serena said helped their relationship grow strong so quickly.
The Bachelor Nation star said she understands how people outside of the Bachelor world don’t understand how anyone could fall in love so quickly, but after experiencing “Paradise,” she totally gets it.
“You’re basically living with this person right out of the gate. You’re in crazy uncomfortable heat, you’re not sleeping, I had food poisoning, Joe had food poisoning, his ex-girlfriend is down on the beach where they met. You are dealing with these unbelievable obstacles. People who think that it’s this wonderful free vacation, I was at my worst some days,” Serena explained.
Serena also added that you’re typically spending 21 hours a day with your significant other and there are no phones, social media, TV, friends, or any other distractions. She said, “All you do is talk to each other,” so you’re not as “afraid to ask those hard questions” that typically wouldn’t come up for months in a relationship outside of “Paradise.”
Mike said he feels that if you stay from beginning to end, it’s equivalent to four or five months in the real world. Serena agreed, adding, “They say a day is a week, and I would say 1,000 percent.”
She added that “it’s the most bizarre situation ever, but it does work.”
