Michelle Young Tells ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’ Why She Doesn’t Believe in Love at First Sight, Plus: How She Got Cast on ‘The Bachelor’
Fans first met Michelle Young on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and now she’s just started her journey as the Bachelorette.
The fifth-grade teacher stopped by “Live with Kelly and Ryan” to discuss everything from how she decided to give the process another try to why she doesn’t believe in love at first sight.
Ryan Seacrest started out by asking Michelle how a teacher from Minnesota found herself on “The Bachelor” in the first place.
Michelle admitted that to this day, she still doesn’t know who nominated her for Matt James’ season.
The Bachelorette said, “I was nominated for the show. I still have no idea how I was nominated. If you sent my name in, please stand up. I would appreciate it, and thank you! I got a phone call, and I was really hesitant to start off and then eventually decided to take the risk. Clearly it was worth it!”
She said her students are “definitely aware” of her role as the Bachelorette, but she’s always prioritized teaching when it comes to balancing filming and her students.
Michelle shared, “I was able to shoot ‘The Bachelorette’ over the summer. I was already out of the classroom when I was on Matt’s season. For me, when I make that commitment to step into a classroom, I want to make sure I can fulfill that.”
And now that we’ve seen her first episode, Kelly Ripa and Ryan had to ask Michelle if she felt like she had found love at first sight.
Michelle replied, “I am a person who doesn’t really believe in love at first sight. That’s the biggest question I get asked with all these men walking out of the limo, being asked if I experienced love at first sight, and my answer to that is no. When I’m looking for my ideal guy, it’s all intellectual. I have to fall in love with their mind in order to be in love with them.”
And while she doesn’t necessarily believe in love at first sight, Michelle knows exactly what kind of guy she’s looking for.
The Bachelorette said, “I want someone who is driven, passionate, a good person, and someone who is humble. This experience comes with a spotlight, and you come into this experience without that spotlight and you leave with a spotlight. So there can be some changes that go on there. For me, it was really important to make sure that these guys have a good head on their shoulders and can stay humble.”
Ryan asked Michelle why she decided to come back to look for love on TV for a second time, and Michelle revealed it’s because she fell in love the first time, despite it not working out with Matt.
“I saw it work for me the first time around. I’m not the kind of person who’s typically vulnerable and it was a journey that allowed me to do that, and it really challenged me to do that. So coming back knowing that it works is why I said yes the second time around,” Michelle explained.
And when Kelly asked if the experience of being the lead is more fun than being a contestant, Michelle laughed, saying, “100 percent, Kelly, 100 percent. It is always better to be in the driver’s seat!”
Make sure to tune in every Tuesday on ABC at 8 p.m. ET to catch all of Michelle’s Bachelorette journey!
