Joe Opens Up About His Life-Changing Injury and Shares Advice for Others Experiencing Something Similar
Bachelor Nation fans are watching Michelle Young and Joe’s love story unfold on this season of “The Bachelorette.”
After their emotional one-on-one date, Joe stopped by the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast to discuss the conversation he and Michelle had in further detail.
Joe opened up to co-host Tayshia Adams about feeling comfortable sharing that difficult story with Michelle.
The Bachelor Nation star said, “It’s not something I usually do, and I’m not always comfortable sharing that, but Michelle and I had already built a connection around basketball and I wanted to make sure that she knew more about me and what I had been through. I wanted her to know how fighting through those injuries affected my life and how it was tough mentally after working so hard for a goal.”
Joe said it wasn’t easy to share his story, but “I definitely wanted her to know what I was going through so she could paint a better picture of who I am as a person, so I’m happy that I was able to open up to her.”

He also revealed why his life-changing injury isn’t something he brings up often, especially on dates.
Joe said, “I never wanted anyone to feel sorry for me, so trying to explain that to somebody who hasn’t been through that process and that grind wouldn’t fully understand. Having someone to talk to about it who has been through that process and has gone through those hard days of practice and conditioning made it really good to build that deeper connection that we have together.”
Joe explained that when he got injured, he had just transferred away from the University of Minnesota to St. Mary’s, so he was far away from home for the first time.
“Having basketball taken away from me at the same time was what really made it hard for me. I didn’t have anyone to really support me in those moments in person. I didn’t have many people to reach out to or speak with and I really just felt alone,” Joe revealed.
“That was difficult and I knew I was going through a dark situation and I wanted to put myself in a better position after that, so that’s why I ended up transferring back to be closer to home to have that support system around me,” he explained.
Tayshia chimed in and shared that she has also faced a life-changing injury before, and while it wasn’t sports-related like Joe’s, it was equally jarring.
She explained that she was hit by a truck her first week of her freshman year of college and fractured her pelvis.
This left her hospitalized, using a walker, and out of classes for the first four months of her freshman year.
Tayshia noted, “I know exactly what you mean when you say you need to be surrounded by your loved ones,” and also asked Joe if he had any advice for others going through a similar experience.

He said, “Trust the process. It can be a really dark tough time and injuries can be eight, 12, 16 weeks, but do what you have to do every single day knowing that if you trust the process, things will work out. It’s tough, you climb up that hill to get back in shape to get that injury healed and sometimes you get injured again and fall back down there. It can be tough mentally, so trust the process, but make sure your mental health is as good as it can be.”
And he also credited his family and friends with helping him in his recovery, saying, “My friends and family are a big part of my life. I keep a small circle still, but those people that are around me are the ones that got me to where I am today. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person that I am, so just having that good support around me is what really helped me through that time. I’m really grateful for it.”
