Abigail Heringer Shares How Noah Erb Supports Her Hearing Loss, Plus: Why ‘Paradise’ Was Easier for Her Than ‘The Bachelor’
Bachelor Nation fans first met Abigail Heringer on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to find love with Noah Erb on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
During her time on “The Bachelor,” Abigail opened up to Matt James about her hearing loss and how she wears her cochlear implant.
Since her time on the shows, Abigail has been sharing her life with Bachelor Nation on social media, including many posts about being deaf, where she educates her hundreds of thousands of followers.
Most recently, Abigail took to Instagram to answer some fan questions about her cochlear implants.
She started off by sharing that she was “born profoundly deaf” so she has no hearing without her cochlear implants in.
She revealed that she got her implant when she was 2.5 years old.
Abigail wrote, “When I take it off to sleep, shower, swim, etc. it’s complete silence for me. TBH It’s nice when you live in a noisy city lol!”
And while she loves sharing the benefits of her cochlear implants, Abigail also shared some of the challenges she faces with her hearing disability.
She wrote, “While I try to be positive and encouraging about my hearing loss, I’m gonna be real for a second. It’s not always easy living with a disability. Here’s some thoughts I have just to show you you’re not alone or wrong for thinking them.”
The Bachelor Nation star listed four thoughts, writing, “1. I’ll never know what the word sounds like for a hearing person. What would it be like to have normal hearing? How much am I missing out on in conversations that I don’t realize? How would my life be different? 2. Not being able to be as extroverted as I want to be in new group settings because I spent most of my time trying to figure out what people are saying. 3. Dealing with deaf stereotypes or people questioning/asserting their opinions on my family’s choice to the cochlear implant route instead of ASL. 4. And lastly, $$$! Cochlear implants and accessories are so expensive.”
Abigail also shared how some of this impacted her time on “The Bachelor.”
She revealed that hearing in the larger group settings on the show was “hard.”
Abigail said, “The group dates are so crucial in getting more time with the lead, but I felt like I spent most of my time just trying to follow the conversation instead of showing who I was. I guess the biggest blessing in disguise was that by not knowing what the drama was usually kept me out of trouble haha!”
She added, “‘Paradise’ was so much easier because it was more 1:1 time and I felt like I was more in my element.”
And that’s where she met her partner Noah Erb, who she said has been extremely supportive of her hearing loss in their relationship.
She shared a list of what Noah does to support her that she “appreciates so much.”
Abigail wrote that he “1. Repeats things if he sees I’m struggling to understand a waiter, cashier, etc. 2. If we’re going to a social setting where people might not know my situation, he’ll either give them a heads up or fill them in if I miss something. 3. He hands me my batteries first thing in the morning (that’s my personal fav!) 4. He’s always asking questions! I love having someone that’s so curious in learning more about my hearing loss and ways he can help me!”
How sweet! We love Noah and Abigail’s love and we love how Abigail uses her platform to have these important conversations.
