Former Bachelorette Trista Sutter Shares Her Candid Advice for Parenting Teenagers
Parenting in general isn’t easy, but teenagers in particular have a reputation for making parenting even more challenging.
Thankfully, former Bachelorette and mom to two teenagers Trista Sutter is sharing some candid parenting advice.
Trista was the very first Bachelorette and is married to Ryan Sutter, who she gave her final rose to.
The two tied the knot in 2003 and now share two children together: Max, 14, and Blakesley, 13.
And during a recent Instagram Q&A, a fan and fellow mom asked Trista if she has any tips for parenting teenagers.
Trista got candid with her answer and wrote, “I’m definitely not an expert here as my kids are 13 and 14, but I will say that I am trying my best to be a good listener, give them more independence, use moments of difficulty as life lessons, and never shy away from talking about the sometimes harsh realities of life.”

The former Bachelorette continued on, saying, “I still have a lot to learn, but I’m trying to be their safe place where they know they are loved. That is my priority.”
That’s some great advice!
And in an upcoming Mother’s Day interview, Trista opened up exclusively to BachelorNation.com about what she hopes to teach her kids as they continue to grow.
She said, “As a parent, you hope to teach your kids everything, but there are some lessons they learn for themselves… and that’s okay or even better in the long run.”
Trista continued on, adding, “Right now, I’m focused on the big picture stuff, like the importance of integrity and thoughtfulness, surrounding yourself with friends who lift you up, the power of respect and honesty, not allowing social media to determine your self-worth, the benefits of hard work, and knowing that I will always be there with a hug, a ride or a hand.”
We always love some words of wisdom from our very first Bachelorette!
