Kelley Flanagan Opens Up About Her Health Struggles and Taking a Step Back from Law
Sharing her story.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Kelley Flanagan on Season 24 of “The Bachelor,” and at the time, she was an attorney working for her family’s law firm.
Now, Kelley got candid on the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast about why she pressed pause on her career as a lawyer and how her health struggles have impacted the past few years for her.
Kelley told co-hosts Mike Johnson and Bryan Abasolo that her health issues are actually the reason she hasn’t been practicing law.
She said, “I took a back burner on law for the time being, and the reason is because I’ve been having so many health issues. Around a year ago, I realized I needed to stop everything and try to figure out what the hell is going on with me. I took a step back and did more content creating while I tried to figure out my health.”

Kelley went on, saying, “Now here I am and 75% of the time I’m fine and traveling and having fun, but 25% of the time I get hit like a ton of bricks. That’s why I took a step back from law. I might go back into it, just not necessarily with my family’s firm. I might do something else with my law degree. For right now, I’m not doing law.”
And Kelley opened up to Mike and Bryan about what she’s been struggling with. The Bachelor Nation star got candid about her Lyme disease diagnosis and how it affects her.
“Lyme disease sets my autoimmune issues off. Like, for the past week, my entire face was really blown up and I’ll be allergic to everything. It’s so many autoimmune things. Like, one day it’s fatigue, one day I just feel like complete sh*t, the next day my face is blown up,” Kelley shared.
She detailed more symptoms she deals with, explaining, “Within the past two years my weight has also fluctuated 20 pounds within a couple week span, and it has nothing to do with what I’m eating and I barely drink. It’s hard to know what’s hitting me and when it’s going to hit me. There’s no consistency. I just keep getting hit.”
Kelley shared that her body is extremely sensitive and she doesn’t have the stamina of many of her friends her age.
She said, “When I go out with my friends, their stamina of staying out and doing a bunch of fun things is way better than mine. I would wake up the next day and not be able to move. Right now I’m in this period of trying to truly figure it out.”

And while the symptoms have definitely gotten worse over time, the Bachelor Nation star shared that she’s experienced odd symptoms for most of her life.
She said, “Since fourth grade, I’ve always had weird issues like stomach issues. Then right before I went on ‘The Bachelor,’ I remember I looked nine months pregnant. I was working out for two hours a day with a trainer and I was super active, but I couldn’t figure out what was going on with my weight. After the show, I think the transition with the breakup, publicity, and the fan aspect all put a lot of stress on my body. Finally, I realized it got way worse than it was before and needed to find out what it was.”
We’re wishing Kelley the best as she continues on her healing journey. If you want to hear more of her conversation on the “Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation” podcast, check out the full episode below.
