EXCLUSIVE: Randi Rahm & Cary Fetman Reveal the Unbelievable Story Behind Charity’s Gorgeous Night 1 Dress
A gown like no other!
Last week, fans saw Charity Lawson sparkle in her stunning Night 1 gown on the season premiere of “The Bachelorette.”
What viewers don’t know from watching the episode is the countless hours of hard work and last-minute changes that went into the custom dress.
Haute couture designer Randi Rahm and longtime Bachelor Nation wardrobe stylist Cary Fetman just sat down for an exclusive interview with BachelorNation.com where they discussed the behind-the-scenes story behind the gown.
The two also teased what we can expect from Charity’s fashion moments throughout the rest of her season of “The Bachelorette.”
Check out their full interview below!
Bachelor Nation: Thank you both for taking the time to chat with us! We’ve been loving all the buzz about Charity’s Night 1 gown. Can you tell us a little bit about the creative process that goes into putting together a look like hers?
Randi Rahm: Absolutely! It was really Cary’s idea to make sure our Bachelorette was in a color that was different than we’ve ever seen before. His eye really is spectacular, and the pink looked so beautiful on Charity. What people might not realize, though, is that she picked that dress and she loved it, but just days before we filmed the premiere, Charity decided she wished it was strapless instead of a halter. This is a real couture gown, not a typical dress that comes off the rack. It’s one of a kind and has to be handmade, so it was a process to change it. Cary called me and asked if we could do it, and we had to work 24/7 to create a new neckline.
Cary Fetman: And this wasn’t your typical tweaks like taking it in, shortening it, adding a slit, opening the back, or adding sleeves. Those are normal changes, but taking a dress from a halter to a strapless in one day is nearly impossible, but Randi made it happen!
RR: Right, taking something that’s a high neck and turning it into a sweetheart strapless gown requires a whole new construction of the dress. So what you didn’t see is that I had to reconstruct the garment from the inside because not only is it strapless but it’s backless. But I love Cary and I love working with our Bachelorettes, so I couldn’t say no! Especially for Charity’s first night, I wanted to be able to give her exactly what she wanted. It was such a quick turnaround, truly 24 hours to rebuild the entire dress and get it shipped from my atelier here in New York to filming in Los Angeles.
CF: Randi, I don’t know who else could do what you do! If I say I need 12 of your staff to stay overnight and just keep working, they do. And I’ve watched her team work. They have four people hand-beading one small piece of fabric and meet in the middle, it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before in your life! The last-minute changes were unexpected because Charity was locked in with the high-neck version of the gown around a month earlier, and while I told her it looked beautiful as a halter on her, we both wanted her to love it and for her to go into Night 1 feeling her very best. So we made the impossible possible!
BN: That’s incredible! What an amazing story behind such a stunning gown. How did you incorporate Charity’s personality into the dress?
CF: I know that she loves color and I know that she doesn’t like to play it safe. You’ll see throughout the season, we don’t play it safe when it comes to her fashion choices! For this Night 1 dress in particular, though, I have over 18 racks of gowns from different designers that she got to look through, but she quickly fell in love with the Randi Rahm one. How it always ends up being a Randi Rahm gown? I ask myself the same question every season! There is just a difference in the quality and how they feel when they put them on. I’m not pushing them to wear anything. The different women have just been drawn to her gorgeous pieces.
BN: How do you ensure each look is different and unique from Bachelorette to Bachelorette? They really all are; no two looks have been alike!
RR: I think what Cary knows about me and what he values most is that I am a true couturier. That’s what I do for a living. For example, if you came to me for a dress, I interview you and get to know what you want and what your personality is like. I am an artist in the world of fashion, you are my blank canvas. So I create art for each and every individual. You are your fashion. If you look in the mirror and you have the most beautiful $2 million dress on and you don’t feel good, that is not the dress for you. It could be a $2 dress and if you feel beautiful, it’s the one. I will know immediately during a fitting based on how someone smiles and how they stand up a certain way that it’s the dress for them. It all comes from within. And Cary really helps key in on that with all the Bachelorettes. I love all of the Bachelorettes that I’ve gotten to meet over the years. They all say to me they went into it thinking they wouldn’t wear beading or certain styles, but they say when they put on one of my dresses, they knew it was the one.
CF: It is amazing. We mix Randi’s pieces in with other ones and they all do come in thinking they want one thing, but I just set them free and let them try on everything. As they go through and pick their favorites, I follow behind and pick out my favorites for them and they try them all on. On that first day, it’s really more about playing and getting to know each other. It can be really overwhelming, but they probably try on anywhere between 20 and 24 dresses.
BN: Do either of you have a favorite Night 1 look from your time working with the Bachelorettes?
RR: Oh, my gosh, I must have done at least 15 opening night dresses. And when you say that to someone like me, they are all my children. How do a pick a favorite?! But right now, Charity’s Night 1 dress is bringing me a lot of happiness and joy. I really do love them all, and my designs come from love and passion. The women are also all so different, so really how do you pick!?
CF: Gosh, I don’t know if it’s a Night 1 dress, and I never really pick one because there are way too many that I have loved over the years, but someone did just send me a picture of JoJo Fletcher in the most beautiful cobalt blue gown and it’s one of my favorites to look back on at the moment.
BN: Those are both amazing dresses! When it comes to dresses like Charity’s Night 1 dress, how do you decide what accessories would complement this dress?
CF: The jewelry and makeup really are such an important part of complementing the gown. Quick shout-out to Gina Modica, our incredible makeup artist. She has such an amazing eye and will find a color of one bead on the dress and tie that into an eyeshadow color or lip color. It’s truly amazing. That’s the beauty of working together with people for 20 years. But for the jewelry and accessories, I try to make it effortlessly flow together. The ring and the earrings Charity wore went so beautifully with the gown. They didn’t have to be too loud because the dress was the focal point, but they complemented each other. She also had on a gorgeous pair of shoes and fans didn’t see this, but her shoes somehow ended up breaking during Night 1 and I had to run back to the hotel and get her another pair! Charity was probably shoeless for an entire hour.
BN: Oh, wow! Can you tease if we’ll see more of Charity in Randi’s looks later this season?
RR: Oh yes, I designed quite a few looks for Charity this season!
CF: Charity just has so much fun and explores with fashion this season. I can tease that she wears everything from oversized suits to sequined striped pants to more beautiful gowns and everything in between. Charity went all in, which I love. She doesn’t get stuck in one look. She is so fun, and I think people will be really excited to see all of the pieces she wears throughout the season.
BN: Well, we can’t wait to see all the amazing looks still to come, and we are so thankful that you both took the time to chat with us today about Charity’s beautiful Night 1 dress!
