Abigail Heringer Discusses Why She Doesn’t Know ASL: ‘It Made the Most Sense for Our Family’
Opening up.
Bachelor Nation fans first met Abigail Heringer on Season 25 of “The Bachelor,” and she went on to find love with Noah Erb on Season 7 of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
During her time on the Bachelor Nation shows, Abigail opened up about her hearing loss and how she wears a cochlear implant.
Now, Abigail is taking to social media to share why she doesn’t know ASL despite being deaf.
In her series “Hear Me Out,” Abigail shared why her family chose oral communication over ASL for her and her sister, who are both deaf with cochlear implants.
Abi said, “So I’m deaf and I don’t know ASL. Let’s chat about why that’s okay and not super uncommon. When families make the choice to go the cochlear implant route, some will choose to just focus solely on oral communication, and that’s what my family did. Other families will choose to learn a mix of both sign language and oral communication. Again, I’m only speaking about my experience here and it’s different for everybody and their families. Not one of these choices is better than the other. There are valid reasons for choosing either one.”
The Bachelor Nation star shared why her family chose the path that they did and why it worked for them.
She said, “Here’s why my family decided to focus solely on oral communication… When I got the implant when I was 2 years old, I spent the majority of my life since then learning how to listen and speak with the processor. That way I would have a higher probability of having a successful implantation. In addition, no one else in my family is deaf besides my sister, who also wears a cochlear implant. We did take a risk in only relying on oral communication, but it was a choice that made the most sense for my family and our situation.”
Abigail clarified that just because she doesn’t know ASL doesn’t mean she is against it at all.
She explained, “Because I’m deaf and I don’t rely on sign language does not mean I’m against the language itself. I believe that those things aren’t mutually exclusive. I understand that for some, they do not get to have a choice and that I’m extremely privileged to be able to have a cochlear implant and the time/resources to be able to learn to listen and speak with it. None of it is cheap and they are very time-consuming.”
Abigail shared that while she’s had her cochlear implant since she was 2 years old, they are still pretty new and people are still learning about them.
She said, “Cochlear implants are also a relatively new technology, and a lot of people are still learning about them for the first time and seeing deaf people being able to communicate orally instead of just sign language. I still get comments to this day with people wondering how I can hear and speak if I’m deaf. I really do appreciate the curiosity and I’m so glad that you guys feel comfortable enough to ask these questions on my page. I really do want to have my page be a resource and where I can offer my perspective.”
And the Bachelor Nation star also thanked all of the people in the ASL community who follow and support her.
She said it’s important to her to acknowledge the people who are “working together from both sides to make this topic less divisive.”
We love learning from Abigail. Make sure you all check out her series “Hear Me Out” every Wednesday on her social media pages to learn more.
