Getting candid.
Bachelor Nation fans are watching Charity Lawson’s love story unfold each week on “The Bachelorette.”
Now, the leading lady is stopping by for an exclusive conversation with BachelorNation.com looking back on her experience so far this season.
Check out our full conversation below!
Bachelor Nation: Charity, thank you so much for chatting with us! When watching your season back so far, has there been anything really surprising for you?
Charity Lawson: Of course! I think it’s pretty obvious the whole Brayden situation was really shocking for me. It has been really difficult to watch back because when I would sit down with Brayden, he was honest about how he was feeling, but his tone was very different than what it was to the guys in the house. I felt like at a certain point, it just became too much and he was overshadowing the other guys. So that was really difficult for me to watch back. I was also just surprised he had so many strong feelings about the process that he didn’t share with me.
BN: That makes a lot of sense. It’s clear you’ve developed really strong feelings for multiple people. How did you navigate balancing these different deep relationships?
CL: That’s a great question. I spent a lot of time journaling. It can be really hard to be present in the moment because this journey moves so fast. I really try to be present in the moment, but it’s still difficult sometimes. So being able to dedicate time to myself and get my thoughts onto paper was really helpful. I was able to read back how I felt about each guy. I also had handwritten letters from home from a lot of my friends who are married. They gave me advice on what to look for and how they knew their partner was their person. That was really helpful too to feel like they were there guiding me. Ultimately, it got easier to navigate as time went on, but up until the very end balancing different relationships was hard for me. I just had to lean into the whole “when you know, you know” feeling that I couldn’t shake. There is no right way to handle all of this, but I did my best!
BN: That sounds like a great way to navigate it all. You’re right, there is no right way! When looking back, is there anything you now wish you maybe handled a bit differently?
CL: I feel like I handled some situations very generously, a little too gracious actually, but that’s just who I am as a person. I don’t want to apologize for that, but like should I have snatched Brayden’s rose back? Absolutely. The whole Xavier conversation was definitely an empowering moment for me, but I think I was a little too generous and gracious in that conversation. So I don’t think I wish I did anything different, but maybe just acted a bit more strongly to emphasize my point that there is absolutely no tolerance for some of what was being said. Sometimes I wish I handled things like that a bit differently, but overall I had a great experience and I feel like I handled myself very well!
BN: We agree! How have you navigated feedback from fans online while the show has been airing?
CL: At the beginning, I was a lot more active and involved with it all. Now, I dedicate myself to engaging with fans on Monday nights with funny Threads and tweets. I choose what to participate in and what I read or don’t read. I don’t spend too much time on people’s posts or podcasts unless they are a positive space for me. So that’s how I protect my peace with it. I mostly just have fun interacting on Twitter because I love to laugh at myself. Protecting my mental health will always come first, though, so I’ve really had to emphasize those boundaries as the Bachelorette. It’s not always been easy, but it helps that the fans have been, for the most part, very loving and supportive of me.
BN: Well, we’re glad you are putting yourself first and we love keeping up with all of your posts. Thank you so much for your time, Charity! We can’t wait to watch the rest of your season unfold.
